W hat would’ve been a
glorious day in our na
tion’s capital turned out far
from spectacular as the Mar
tin Luther King Jr. dedication
ceremony was postponed due
to Hurricane Irene. The dedi
cation was set for Sunday,
August 28 but has now been
moved to an unspecified date
in either September or Octo
ber.
President Barack Obama
was scheduled to dedicate the
site at 11 a.m. Sunday morn
ing. Many civil rights lead
ers, political leaders and reli
gious leaders were scheduled
to make appearances at the
event but after receiving word
of the postponement, many
were left with disappointment
and new travel plans.
The renowned Morehouse
College Glee Club was struck
with dissatisfaction as it was
scheduled to perform at the
dedication Sunday morn
ing. The Glee Club was how
ever, able to perform Friday
at the Alpha Phi Alpha King
production where they cul
minated the program with
the singing of “God Give Us
Men,” and “I’m building Me a
Home.”
Morehouse College Presi
dent Robert Franklin weighed
in on the matter.
“The safety of our patrons
and all parties involved in
this worthwhile effort has al
ways been most important to
me and the Morehouse Col
lege Board of Trustees,” said
Franklin. “With the post
ponement of the King memo
rial unveiling, and our con
nection to it, we determined
that moving the date of our
concert is the best decision.”
The news of the delay left
many Glee Club members
disenchanted as they had
hoped to be a part of Sunday’s
festivities.
“I found out getting off the
bus for Friday’s event,” said
Morehouse College senior
and Glee Club member Paul
Daniels. “I received an email
from the Washington Post
reading ‘King Unveiling Post
poned,’ so I showed both our
tour manager and Dr. Mor
row but they had not yet re
ceived word.”
After confirmation from
school officials, Dr. Morrow
made the announcement to
his students.
“We were extremely disap
pointed because this is a once
in a lifetime opportunity,” said

F rom Notorious B.I.G’s
death to President
Obama’s election, various
events have occurred shap
ing one’s HBCU experience.
However, during the past 13
years, one event did not oc
cur - an event integral to the
HBCU experience, an event
that came in the form of a foot
ball game. This game was be
tween Morehouse College and
Howard University known as
“The Nation’s Classic”.
These two prominent HB-
CUs have been rivals since
1923 in which the first foot
ball game was played. In its
74-year history, Morehouse
has won only nine games and
tied twice out of the 33 games
played.
Since 1997, not only has the
tension risen between both
schools, but a curiosity in
who has become a better team
has sparked. As both schools
strive to bring forth excel

H e sat patiently in the au
dience of the 2011 More
house College Live Awards.
On pins and needles, Travis
Randle’s hands were overly
sweaty as he began to shake
a little. Justin Major ’ll, then
election’s committee chair
man, came on stage with an
envelope in his hand. He be
gan to read off the election
results of the Student Gov
ernment Association (SGA)
presidential race between
then juniors Randle, the in
cumbent, and Eric Bennett.
Randle’s heart stopped as
he hears not the percentage of
votes for his opponent, but the
actual number of votes. As
Major continued, Randle was
relieved to hear the amount of
votes he had obtained.
“For a second it was like I
was in a time vacuum,” Ran
dle said. “The struggle, the
stress, the pressure of the year
before, it all seemed to go
away. It was gratifying.”
In that same moment, Ran
dle had made history being
elected for a second term as
the Morehouse student body
president. Randle, however,
does not take this opportunity
for granted and realizes that
this only means more work
for him.
“I try not to get caught up
in the hype, but, for me right
now, a second term doesn’t
mean anything if I don’t
take lessons that I’ve learned
and apply them,” Randle re
marked about winning a sec
ond term, “I must remain bal
anced, humble, and focused.”
The lessons Randle speaks
of come from his experience

Daniels. “It’d be an honor to
be able to sing at the unveiling
and to be able to present such
a monument on behalf of a
fellow Morehouse Man; one
of our own who transformed
the world.”
The unveiling of the King
memorial was not the only
event that the Glee Club
missed out on as they were
also scheduled to perform at
the Martin Luther King Jr. Li
brary.
Daniels and others do re
main hopeful of keeping hold
of their opportunity to partic
ipate in the unveiling whenev
er the new date is announced.
The Glee Club departed
Washington D.C. Saturday
morning after they observed
the new monument.
The new date for the dedi
cation and unveiling is still
TBD.
