Janus was two-faced, not be cause he was double-dealing or false, but rather because he stood guard at the gates of Rome. One face turned to the front; the other, to the back. Therefore, none could enter or leave Rome without his know ing it. January, then, is appropri ately named after Janus; for it is the beginning of a very im portant undertaking; a new year. Additionally, since he faces both to the front and to the back of the entrance to the city, he symbolically looks back on the year just ended and for ward to the year beginning. So look back with Janus to 1974. Reflect on the sorrows and joys of the past. Further, consider what you have learn ed during that year. Then, look forward to 1975 with renewed courage based on the mistakes of the past and the knowledge resulting from each experience. And with Janus, prepare for an even better year. tion on Jekyll Island. Only ten students from the state were chosen to appear.
