PAGE TWO THE HEXAGON FEBRUARY, 1975> EDITORIALS DIRECT ENERGY TOWARD THE BUILDING OF SPIRIT UNITED WE STAND - DIVIDED WE WILL FALL “United we stand and divided we fall . . Yes students and faculty of Elbert County High, we have problems and more problems from the results and opinions of the survey the Hexagon recently took. We have more to be concerned with than the threat of a nation wide recession and the surge of gasoline and food prices. Let’s look at one of these problems: First everyone seems to be crying for more school spirit; my friend, school spirit is more than just supporting one’s team, but it is also show ing pride in your school as a whole— it’s buildings, it’s sur roundings, it’s people, and most of all yourself. I have no magic solution for this prob lem, but I think the main artery of this problem lies in our hearts. Believe it or not, there is a basic racial problem exist ing in this school. You can not feed, you can not hear, and you can barely see it; because no: one is, marching around pro testing, no one is saying It loud, but given the chance to put your opinions on paper it is a differ ent story. UNITY—That is the answer to the above problem. It is not magical, it will not occur today, tomorrow, or next week. It will take awhile, but we can conquer at and tlhe best thing about it is that, everyone of us can’ help. Unless we jerk out survey the Hexagon staff re cently conducted. Questionaire forms were issued randomly to a total of 320 persons, includ ing students', administrators' and faculty members. Of the 278 forms given to students, 164 were returned for tabula tions, while the faculty of 42 returned 30 to be included. 1. How regularly do you eat school lunches? Out of a total of 194 persons, only 55 think school spirit is high, while that number doubled in saying that its low (120), eight said average, and eleven did not respond to this question. Let’s join together to conquer this problem. 2. How do you feel about the quality of the food served? Excellent—9, Good—110, Poor -—49, Unsatisfactory-—17, No response—9. 3. Root the prejudices within our hearts HEXAGON SURVEY RESULTS Below Is ifjhe result of the BY COACH CLOER When we walked into the Franklin County High School gym for the region basketball playoffs, we were all confront ed with what the word® “school spirit” really mean. On the op posite side of the gym our op ponent’s student body (North Hall High School) was stand ing clapping, yelling, and en couraging their school team. They were not unruly, crude, or vulgar. They were an or ganized group of teenagers who had nO' inhibitions about sup porting their school athletic teiam. They were not concern ed whether people would feel they were silly or immature. They were obviously proud of their school and its accomplish ments. School enthusiasm and pride are infectious and soon we were responding with the same support and zeal. We need to consider some definition of school spirit. It is not blowing a whistle from the stands in order to interrupt itbe orderly progress of the game. It is not going to a pep rally just as an excuse to leave elates. It' is not having to be instructed to enter the gym or Granite Bowl. It is not cutting a pep rally. It is not sitting at a pep rally for thirty minute® without participating. Obviously school spirit is the exact opposite of these and more. It is that intangible feel ing' o,f pride in our institution when we do something well, and that feeling of remorse or embarrassment when we give lfess than a “class” effort. All great institutions have spirit that is generated by the people who comprise the institution. Those who lack this spirit us ually become inconsequential. Some of you may be offended by thiis article because you are the spirited people at Elbert County High School. But what about that person next to 1 you? Have you tried to influence, an other’s behavior to the point that they are proud of our school. Energy directed toward a project that is morally right and not harmful to anyone is time well spent. Energy di rected toward the building of school spirit is time well epent. Let’s all spend some energy wisely.
