♦ ZWJrm Community Crisis Center ATLANTA BARB-Page 9 The Community Crisis Center is an incorporated, non-profit, self-governing,, social - service agency pro - viding free and confidential counseling, medical, and other services both to the 10th Street Community and to the entire metropolitan Atlanta area. The Center is presently funded by a grant from the Drug Abuse Services Sec tion of the Division of Men tal Health of the Georgia Department of Human Re sources. A six-month con- tract was awarded last July, and a renewal for another six months has recently been received. The staff is composed of nine full-time para-profes sionals, a part-time street counselor, several work- study students, and a corps of volunteers. The salaried staff are chosen by a majo rity vote of the existing paid members, usually from those volunteers who have proven themselves to be val uable and dedicated in their work with the Center. The services of the Cen ter are divided into four major areas: Hotline, Medi- chl Clinic, Counseling Ser vice, and Walk-In-Outreach. * ‘Hotline Atlanta” is a crisis - intervention phone service immediately avai lable to all the million- and-half residents of the me tropolitan area. It’s operat ed 24-hours a day, seven days a week, and can handle almost any human problem with confidential counseling and/or referral to appro priate agencies. The Hot line is averaging between 1,500 and 2,000 calls per month. The Center has al so begun operation of a state-wide VD Watts Line. The Free Medical Clinic, staffed by volunteer doc tors and nurses, is held three nights each week. A General Clinic is held on Monday and Thursday nights at 7:00 p.m., and treats most common ailments, including VD. A Women’s Clinic is held on Tuesday nights at 6:30 pm for pregnancy-test ing, birth-control, and gyne cological problems. Preg nancy counseling and refer ral to abortion clinics are also available at this time. Drags In Retirement The Counseling Service is just getting underway. It’s purpose is to provide more in-depth and longer- term individual counseling than can be offered over the Hotline or through crisis- intervention walk-in- coun seling. Sessions are handled on an appointment basis with the counselors who volun teer for this service. In ad dition, the Center runs two growth groups, on Wednes day at 7:30 pm, and Thurs day at 8:00 pm. The W a 1 k- In- - Outreach Service is aimed primarily at helping the residents of the 10th Street Community. People can come into the Center from noon to mid night every day, and after hours emergencies, for cri sis counseling, referral, or anything else the staff can provide. The Center has al so recently opened a Free Store for clothing and can ned and packaged food. In addition to these main areas, the Center is involv ed in a number of other ac tivities. Staff members do drug-education work in the Atlanta-area public schools through MACAD ana the YMCA, and are available for speaking on such topics as crisis? counseling and family-planning. The Center is presently working on the development of a drug-ana lysis program for the city. Although he was born in New York, Miss Ramona has turned into a real “Southern Belle.” He worked in the first Gay Lounge in Mont gomery, Alabama, and even stripped in straight Lounges as a “real girl,” To this day, the owners, and cus tomers have not discovered “Ramona’s secret.” While in the U. S. Army, Ramona was the only one in his command that was a soldier by the week, and a well known female imperso nator on the week-ends in New Orleans! He has tra velled extensively, and wor ked as a female imperso nator in many countries overseas. Ramona appear ed at Mrs. P’s Lounge in Atlanta, during the time they had shows. When we asked Ramona his age, he answered sim ply, “Old enough to know better, and young enough not to give a damn! He is an excellent cook, and his interests vary. A charming host, with a terrific sense of humor, Ra mona enjoys designing and sewing his own strip cos tumes. Football, horse back rid ing, water skiing and deer hunting are among his fa vorite sports.
