ATLANTA BARB-Page 4 Gay-ing to the Movies With S. W Building Better Bodies By Ray Martin Gay Pride is making it self felt in the enter tainment media. Two recent films, “The Laughing Policeman” and “Busting,” were the ob ject of strong protest by Gay activists -- the for mer was picketed in San Francisco, where it was filmed. In meetings with studio and network officials Gay Rights spokespersons finally won some conces - sions. The first tangible re sult was an episode of NBCs “Police Story” - which aired in mid-Feb ruary. It dealt with a de ranged man who murder ed homosexuals. It was the first time a script was ’submitted to Gay leaders for approval before it was filmed. As for “The Laughing Policeman,” I don’t see what all the fuss was about. First of all, It’s a damn ed good mystery movie, well-acted by WalterMat- thau, Bruce Dern, Lou Gossett, etc., and beauti fully photographed inAme- rica’s most beautiful city. (Sorry-- Atlanta’s only Number Two.) Objections were raised to a Gay bar scene that was considered “offen sive,” and to the fact that the killer turned out to be a homosexual. The latter complaint is eas ier to deal with. I think, it’s a sign of progress that Gayness was shown to be only one aspect of his per sonality, and Not his mo-, tiye for murder. Perhaps the National Association of Businessmen should The first Miss Gay Chat tanooga pageant was held February 10,1974atDino’s House of Canton - - one of the foremost supper clubs in the city. Sponsored by the Pow der Puff and put together by Cher ice Nicole, it was a tremendous success. Sa tan Deville of Atlanta com mented that he had never seen a contest so well or ganized. Satan had come to help provide entertain ment during the pageant. Also appearing for the audience’s delight were Daisy Dalton, Miss Gay Tennessee 1973 and Che- rice Nicole, director of the pageant and of Billie and her “Beautiful Boys.” The contestants were judged by five straight judges on poise, make up evening wear, sports wear and talent. The show was one of comedy, ele gance, and beauty. Some of the contestants even de signed and made their out fits. As each contestant was introduced for the first time, he carried one red rose accented by long red ribbons. Starting things off with a bang and bringing the house down was Miss protest because he was a businessman! As to the bar sequence, I agree that it’s inaccu rate and exaggerated. However, I’ve seen things go on in bars that would look a lot worse on the big screen. Perhaps the time to worry about our image is when we’re car rying on, not when we see it played back. The use of an actual bar (the Ramrod) in “TheLau ghing Policeman” meant additional revenue for the bar, and for Gays who ap peared as extras. A bar scene is also the reason for objections to “Busting”. While the same answers apply, this movie is indefensible on cine matic grounds. The story of two vice squad cops— Elliott Gould and Robert Blake- - it makes the police look bad for an hour-and- a half, Gays for only five minutes. And if you think the stereotype is dead, catch the bit with Dom DeLuise and a swish chorus line in Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles.” Sure, we can take offense; but the pic ture also puts down Blacks, Rednecks, Chicanos, In dians, Orientals, Germans, Irishmen, Jews, Catho lics, Men, Women, Horses and Movies - - so no one’s left to cast the first stone, and you may as well laugh and enjoy it. Next month: ‘ ‘Conrack,'' “Zardoz” and “Marne. ’ ’ THAT’S ALL, FOLKS By Kathy Nolan Beatrice Boo as she, while modeling her evening wear ran over our emcee and almost knocked Cherice ov er the iron railing. Then Miss Boo continued crui sing the judges as she made her way back to the dressing room. Daisy Dalton, our own Miss Gay Tennessee 1973 , knew she was home again when she stood with tears in her eyes and accepted tips from a long line of old friends during one of her numbers. All of Dai sy’s numbers were, of course, nothing but fan tastic. Satan Deville, of the Stardust Lounge in At lanta, was very _ beautiful and talented and the crowd certainly appreciated her entertainment. Cherice Ni - cole gave her own version of “Champagne Taste” and had the audience in stitches as she fed them cherries from a champagne glass as they tipped her. That number had to be repeated as the crowd would not let Cherice leave the stage. Then came a surprize for Cherice Nicole. A black leather placque engrav ed in gold was presented Dear Ray, I have been working out for two years and have good overall development, but 1 would like to specia lize on my biceps. What is the best exercise for build ing and defining the bi ceps? Barry Athens, Ga. Dear Barry, For die biceps all of the curling movements are the most effective. It’s a mat ter of opinion as to which is best. I prefer the con centration curl, using a relatively heavy dumbell as demonstrated in the photo with three sets of fifteen reps with each arm. Do them slowly and ste adily without a jerking movements. This exercise concentrates all of your output into the biceps. to her by Chattanooga’s own “Fag Hag”, Kathy. It read: “To Cherice Ni cole,'In appreciation of de dication anu hard work— The Miss Gay Chattanooga Pageant 1974.” Kathy ex plained that the reason for this was that Cherice, by being director of the pa geant, gave up his own chances of winning the crown. As the evening came to a climax, pretty Amber Synclair was crowned “Miss Gay Chattanooga,- 1974” by Daisy Dalton, Miss gay Tennessee 1973. First runner up was Tri sha Danelli and the second runner up was Candy Cane. A most important award- one voted on by all the con testants -- Miss Congen iality was given to Misti Dawn. The winners receiv ed cash, trophies, flowers and prizes galore. Don’t miss the next Miss Gay Chattanooga pageant to be sponsored by the Pow der Puff Lounge. We at the Atlanta Barb would like to express our deepest sympathy to Bob Giglio, upon the death of a loved one. Dear Ray, My problem is my waist. I’m flabby and pot bellied with flab on my side. What do you suggest? Flabby Dear Flabby, To reduce and firm up this area do sit ups and leg raises with lots of re petitions. If you aren’t us ed to exercising do as many reps as possible everyday until you build up to fifty of each exercise, then change to every other day or three days per week. As it becomes easier use a board to incline your feet for setups and use iron boots on your feet for leg raises. As the exercises become easier increase the incline and add more weights to your feet. Do as many reps as you can until you build up tb fifty RECOGNITION Because of the responsi ble position our writers hold in the straight society, most of them wish to remain an onymous and use pen names for their columns. Editor NO GERMS ON SOAP Do you hestitate to use the soap in public restrooms? Don’t worry. Germs can’t grow on soap, according to home 1 economists with the Coopera tive Extension Service. ALCOHOL REMOVES INK Use rubbing alcohol to remove bail-point ink stains from walls, furniture, tabletops and countertops, suggest home economists at the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. or so and then increase again. Do these two exer cise^ regularly and you will tighten your belt in a short period of time by burning up calories and melting “flab.” Dear Ray, Is it true that if I eat a good meal! before my workouts that I can turn my fat into muscle? Randall Macon, Ga. Dear Randall, Eating too soon before your workout will result in sluggishness and drow- iness and a poor perfor mance not mention inter ference to your digestion. Wait at least an hour af ter meals for better re sults. Fat doesn’t turn to mus cle any more than muscle turns to fat. They are two different types of tissues and they are not inter changeable but they can replace each other. So the only way to “torn” your fat to muscle is by exer cising to burn calories and remove toe tot and then through continued ex ercise you can build mus cle tissue. At the same time you have to alter your diet to decrease your carbohydrate consumption and increase your intake of protein. Being the “nice guy” that he is, John McBride felt sorry for the “orphan egg” and took it in. It must have been about 10:30pm that night that toe egg started cracking and strange noi ses could be heard coming from within toe shell. Fin ally toe egg burst in a mil- ion pieces, and there it was- Miss Drescena Drape (on roller skates, no less) She enjoyed herself immensely as she drank up customers drinks, hopped onto their tables, smoked their cigar ettes kissed John McBride and finally finished her act leaving most customers in a trance. Just goes to show ya, don’t trust tall drag queens that wear lavendar wigs, purple feathers and attack you from the rear on roller skates while cack ling wildly about some st range Martian Invasion.
