It is amazing how time flys in this city. It seem ed like just yesterday that Chuck’s Rathskeller was the greatest place to go to find a trick or dance, watch a show or just get plastered. That place on Monroe Drive is now Ri chards and is catering to people that get into hard •rock No need to explain that at this time (At least not in the wrecked state that I am in now). The first time that I went to Chuck’s was on January 31, 1969. That’s right, New Years’ Eve. The place was packed to say the least. People were lin ed up outside waiting to get in. Tickets were five dollars. Ernestine Brown was among the entertainers to make that evening another gay time to remember .Mo ther Gus manned the lights that night. That was the first time I had ever met Mother Gus. He was as always very sweet as he told me to get the f- - - away from the light. (The spot was set up on the main bar). Champagne was spread all over the bar that night,, on the floor, stage and ATLANTA BARB is published Monthly in Atlanta, Georgia. But everyone was kissing each other. I even kissed a wo man that night. In the audience there were several people that were new in Atlanta . Among them was the man tliat opened the Cruise Quar ters, later known as the Box Office, and up until December of this year, Frankenstein’s Cave. Cypress street was in it’s prime at that time and was as busy as ever that night. Our crew in vited several members of the Cypress crowd to a grand New Years’ party in Southeast Atlanta, in DeKalb County. You may have been one of the fifty or more odd people that joined us there, when we exited the party at the Rat hskellers. In addition tc being drunk as an old queen could be I came out to find my car had been re moved from the “no.park ing anytime” zone. It was such a problem that we called a cab. After thirty minutes a white colored cab pulled up. ,Flve drunk sickles boarded the Chevy cab and one queen told the driver to cruise Cypress street. He did. We then proceeded to roll the win dows down in the cab and call some nice little so- called hustlers over to the cab. After little persua sion two of them boarded the cab. The driver sug gested calling another cab so we told him to do so. The other cab was in front of the Sheraton Hotel. We all split up and directed the two cabs to a certain well known address for a party. The Cab drivers wer€ tipped well and sent on their way after being com pletely upset by the ex perience that they had just encountered. Next - Good? Old Frank- ensteins Cave.
