Miss "Gay America” Pageant
Attracts Thousands To Atlanta
Atlanta is getting ready
for it! Female impresona-
tors from all over the Globe
will be on hand for the “Big
One”. The impossible
dream, the coveted title of
Miss Gay America. On May
3, 4, and 5th, Atlanta will
host the Third Annual Miss
Gay America Pageant. At
lanta was chosen over sev
eral other cities for a
variety of reasons. Fore
most among these was the
popularity of female im
personation. in the city. The
main ballroom of the
Atlanta American Hotel has
been reserved. The loca
tion is 160 Spring Street and
the hotel is right across the
street from the Trailways
Bus Terminal.
The Miss Gay America
Pageant awards thousands
of dollars of cash prizes
each year to the best female
impersonators in the
United States. 1974 will see
a total of $7,000.00 dollars
in prizes and awards given
to the new Miss Gay
America and her court.
The Miss Gay America
Pageant awards more cash
prizes than any other
contest in the nation. M. G.
A. will receive more money
than either Miss Universe
or Miss America from a
single source. Miss Gay
America will be seen
throughout the United
States through television
and newspaper coverage of
the event. Network officials
have assuredthe founders
that it is only a matter of
time until the Pageant will
be telecast nationwide.
All this from a small idea
spawned 3 years ago by a
Gay Club operator in Nash
ville, Tenn., Jerry Peek,
founder of the Miss Gay
America Pageant, or
iginally planned a small re
gional contest. But the first
year, entries were re
ceived from all across the
nation. Local television and
radio coverage was inten
sive, and from that be
ginning, a nationwide
contest has evolved.
The first Miss Gay
America hailed from Hot
Springs, Arkansas, and is
known professionally as
Norma Kristie. His efforts
have in large part, made the
pageant what it is today.
During his reign, he
travelled over 10,000 miles
promoting the pageant. In
