Dear Ray,
Everytime I workout I
get so sore I can hardly
move and stay sore for
days afterwards. Yet if
I don’t work as hard I
don’t notice any impro
vement. Should I decrease
the reps, weight, or what
should I do?

Dear Mark,
Muscle soreness is the
result of working the mus
cles harder than they have
been accumstomed, in which
case you should work them
again the following day.
It isn’t necessary to work
them hard but ..just; enough to
flush them wth an ample
blood supply. Continue wor
king them everyday until
you do not experience any
further soreness, and this
should take three or may
be four days. If, however
the soreness continues af
ter a week, then you are
doing more than your mus
cles can take. If this is
•the case cut down on the
sets, reps, or amount of
resistance or all three.
However do work them un
til they feel thoroughly
pumped up and congested.
Also many people leei
that large quantities of vi
tamin C before and after
your workouts will re
lieve soreness. Some lif
ters take 500 mgs before
and 400 mgs after. This
was recommended by a
doctor in England in 1968,
after experiments with vi
tamins and muscle sore
ness.
Dear Ray,
I don’t believe I am
getting enough results-
from my leg workouts.
Can you suggest some
leg exercises besides
squats and rising up on the
toes with weights on my
shoulders?

Many people neglect to
develop their legs, and I
believe* the main reason,
is that leg training is real
ly hard work. Leg work
lets you use heavyweights,
and employs the most po
werful muscles of your

Use a heavy weight with
about three sets of twelve
reps. Squats and rising on
the toes are good exercises
SO; I wouldn’t recommend
leaving them out. You
might want to do your calf
work witting down with a
heavy weight across the
knees. Most gyms have
machines tnat make legwork
easier. If you nave the
benefit of working out at
a gym make good use
of the calf machine and
the leg extension and curl
machine. Running three days
per week will help shape
and tone your legs.
Dear Ray,
I am not into exercis
ing and am not likely to
start, but I would like to
know why the guys in the
muscle books shave all of
their body hair. Frankly,
I think body hair is sexy.

Body hair may - appeal
to many especially in this
day of greater apprecia
tion for aunaturel. When
body hair is heavy, es
pecially on the chest and
abdomen, the outline and
definition of the muscles
does not show up as well
as when the hair is remov
ed. So a few days before
pictures are to be taken
many lifters prefer to
shave the body hair. Heavy
growth is removed with hair
clippers and then the job
is finished easily with an
electric razor. Some shave

regularly and some only
for photos. It’s just a mat
ter of taste.
