ATLANTA BARB-Page 8
TO THE EDITOR
Community Activities
Dear Editor,
Although I am not a mem
ber of Metropolitan Com
munity Church, I did att
end their first service in
their new facilities on
Highland Avenue. Last Sun-
day the Rev. John Gill made
mention of the fact that
the flowers on the Com
munion Table were given
by the Atlanta Barb com
memorating the event.
I thought this to be a
notable action on the part
of your newspaper and wish
to express my appreciat
ion for your encouragement
and support of this Minis
try.
With kind regards,
R.E.J., Atlanta , Georgia
Thank you. .
For the letter in which
you expressed your appre
ciation for the flowers.
In the newspaper business,
we receive all kinds of
mail. . . some good, and
some bad and it is always
rewarding to receive com
plimentary letters such as
this one.
The Atlanta Barb supports
the Metropolitan Community
Church because we feel it
performs a worthwhile
service to the homophile
Community.
Dear Editor,
I am a new T.V, in Town.
It would be ■•nice to know
where we can by clothes
dresses, heels, etc., from
stores who will let us try
on the merchandise in Atl
anta.
Please print this in your
fine newspaper. May be
stores catering to us will
advertise with you.
Good luck,
T.V. from Washington, D.C.
Dear T.V.
Your letter did not de
fine as to whether you are
dressed as a male or fe
male when shopping for
clothes. Most stores nat
urally permit females to
try on clothes before buy
ing. The y frown upon
males out of drag trying
to do so. I would suggest
that if you are interested
in purchasing female att
ire, dress as one and try
on your selections in drag.
That way, only your hair
dresser knows for sure.
Sales ladies are not per
mitted to peek behind the
curtained booths in the fit
ting rooms.
Gay Church
Buys New Home
By Jim Snow
The congregation of the
Metropolitan Community
Church recently purchased
the former Hilan - movie
Theater in Atlanta to ser
ve as it’s new church
home. The first service
was held March 10th with
a record attendance.
Formed to serve pri
marily the homophile com
munity here, the Atlanta
church is within the Un
iversal Fellowship of Met
ropolitan Community Chur
ches which now number
55 congregations in major
cities of the free world.
Rev. Troy Perry, charis
matic leader and founder
of this ecumenical move
ment has gathered thou
sands of Gay Christians
into the fellowship princi
pally through his book,
“The Lord Is My Shep
herd and He Knows I’m
Gay.”
According to Rev. John
Gill, Atlanta Pastor, the
170 members here have
contributed and raised fund
over a two-year period to
achieve this goal. The
building, located at 800
North Highland Avenue was
purchased from Storey
Theaters, Inc. who, for the
past two years has leas
ed the Decatur Theater to
the group. The building
seats 600 people.
The Rev. Troy Perry,
will be in Atlanta during
Holy Week for a formal
dedication service.

cannot be as effective as
it could be.
Given the general attitude
of the people of Atlanta,
only an independant agency
designed to deal with the
specific problems of po
lice community relations
will be satisfactory. The
Bond-Helms Bill is a good
one. With minor changes
to allow for more commun
ity input and non-compl-
aintant Investigation it
could have an even more
dynamic effect. The Bill
could not only improve cit
izens respect for law en
forcement officers but in
crease police effectiveness
and morale.
The community relations
commission has endorsed
the Ombudsman Bill. James
Dean, Chairperson of the
Community Relations
Commission Law Enforce
ment Committee. Wrote the
endorsement article which
was later approved by the
full commission. Repre
sentative Dean by-passed
the members of the law
enforcement committee in
this action. Dean and com
mission chairperson Rev.
Randy Taylor met and fin
alized ahe
finalized the rather hur-
riec endorsement article,
ried endoecement article.
The article was not read
at the C.R.C. meeting .
Discussion was short and
approval quick. Chances
are not good that the C.R.C.
will reverse itself. For
tunately what the commun
ity relations commission
untimately recommends is
not as important as what
the city council actually
does. The action of the
C.R.C. may influence the
action of the city council.
Gay people and all citi
zens of Atlanta would be
well advised to consider
leting their opinions on this
matter be known.
Think for a moment about
who you would rather re
port police misconduct to
if you were in a situation
where you would need to
make such a report. Would
you rather report it to
the police security officer,
a Bureaucratic Red Tape
Cutter (Ombudsman) or
an agency specifically des
igned to monitor police
community relations staff
ed by non-police depart
ment professionals and led
by recognized community
leaders. Think about it and
let me and your repre
sentative on the City Coun
cil know your views. Send
me a postcard or letter
and we will let your coun
cil person know your view
If you wish to contact the
council directly , please
write to me, Bill Smith
care of the Atlanta Barb,
or call the Gay Information
Service and we will pro
vide you with the' name
and address of your repre
sentative on the City Coun
cil.
This bill will become
the Council For Action in
April so let the council
know how you feel about
it today.
