Page 6 The Southern Israelite DR. CARL ROLLER of New York City has been awarded the Kussmaul Medal by the University of Heidel berg. The award, made on the anni versary of the birth of Prof. Kuss maul, famous physician, for whom the prize is named, went to Dr. Roller for his discovery of the use of cocaine as a local anesthesia of the eye. ELMER SCHLESINGER, well known New York attorney and former general counsel of the United States shipping board, died suddenly at Aik en, S. C. after a round of golf. He was the son of Leopold Schlesinger of Chicago, a partner in Schlesinger & Mayer, department store. SIMON STEIN of Rochester, N. Y. contributed $250,000 toward the $1,- 000,000 campaign fund for new build ings for the J. Y. M. A.-J. Y. W. A. Besides this amount, Mr. Stein has agreed to pay all campaign expenses, which are expected to total about $50,000. ALBERT EINSTEIN will be honor ed by German Zionists on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday by the plant ing of an Einstein forest in Palestine. This will be in recognition not only of Einstein’s scientific contributions but of his service to the Zionist cause. PROF. SIEGFRIED OCHS, inter nationally known chorus director, died in Berlin at the age of 71. He was founder of the Philharmonic Chorus of Berlin. SAMUEL DEUTSCH, who died re cently in Chicago, willed $10,000 to the Jewish Charities of Chicago, $2,- 500 to the Chicago Home for Jewish Orphans, and $500 to the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Association. His es tate was estimated at $2,500,000. LADY EMILY SPIELMANN, wid ow of the late Sir Isadore Spielmann of London, died at the age of 71. She was the daughter of Sir Joseph Sebag Montefiore, a president of the Board of Jewish deputies and nephew of Sir Moses Montefiore. MR. AND MRS. FREDERICK BROWN have announced their gift of a building to New York University, the gift being equivalent to at least $1,900,000 in endowment. Mr. Brown is one of New York’s leading real es tate operators. PROFESSOR ALBERG ABRAHAM MICHELSON of the University of Chicago, and DR. ROBERT A. MIL LIKAN of the Institute of California, were awarded gold medals by the So ciety of Arts and Sciences, in recog nition of their achievements in sci ence. The awards were made in New York at the Biltmore Hotel at a ban quet. KATE BERGSON, mother of Henri Bergson, died recently in Paris. She was in her 100th year. MR. AND MRS. PERCY s. STRAUS of New York City have con tributed an endowment fund of $1. 000,000 to New York University, the income of the fund to be used at the discretion of the university officials. COLONEL PATTERSON, comman der of the Jewish Legion in Allenby’s army, was given a reception recently by the Municipality of Tel Aviv. UNITED STATES SENATOR SI MEON D. FESS of Ohio will be the principal speaker at the National con vention dinner of the Union of Ortho dox Jewish congregations of America at Hotel Astor, New York, March 17th, according to announcement made by Harry Rogen, chairman of the na tional convention committee. LUDWIG VOGELSTEIN was re elected chairman of the board of the Union of American Hebrew Congre gations at its convention in San Fran cisco recently. Other members of the board will be Julius Rosenwald, Jacob W. Mack, Maurice D. Rosenberg, Mar cus Rauh, Henry Buckman and Charles Shohl. DR. EMANUEL LIBMAN, well known pathologist and bacteriologist of New York, has given $10,000 to the Johns Hopkins University to establish a lectureship in the department of the history of medicine. MRS. FELIX M. WARBURG was chosen president of the Young Wo men’s Hebrew Association, 31 W. 110th Street, New York, at the annual conference of the association held re cently. Mrs. Warburg has served as president for the past five years. MR. AND MRS. S. D. WISE of Cleveland, Ohio recently established a trust fund of $100,000 for local phi lanthropic purposes. Following this, they announced their further gift of $50,000 to the Jewish Welfare Feder ation. ISADOR LEVY, well known Ger man Jewish publicist and editorial writer of Berlin, died at the age of 78. VON HINDENBURG, president of the German Republic, sent a message of congratulations to the Association of Jewish World War Veterans in Ger many on the occasion of the tenth an niversary of their organization. LOUIS B. MAYER, moving picture magnate, was host at a dinner given last Sunday at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles, in honor of Adolph S.
