“I wanted to have a talk with you,
Lipshitz,” Allan began casually. “I
wonder if you’d come over to my
room?” .
“We can talk on the campus, Lip
shitz answered. “I have to be in
Waverly Hall in half an hour. You
can po that way with me.” Lipshitz
sought no condescension from the col
lege idol.
With a thought for what his fra
ternity brothers would say if they
saw him walking with Lipshitz, Al
lan strode beside his classmate. “I
just wanted to tell you, Lipshitz,”
Allan continued in his off-hand man
ner, “I just wanted to tell you how
J hated that scene Chalmers put on
the other day. It’s been bothering
me. I didn’t want you to think that I
didn’t consider it brutal.”
Lipshitz was embarrassed. “Oh, I
didn’t expect anything better from
Chalmers. We got used to putting
up with such things. I consider the
source and forget it. But of course,
you couldn’t understand such chari
ty.”
Allan laughed, covering his nerv
ousness. “You see, what I particu
larly wanted you to know, you alone,
is that I do understand.” Allan
marshalled his courage for the su
preme step, the step which, he felt,
would free him. “You see,” he con
tinued, “I do understand. I happen
to be Jewish, too.”
Lipshitz came to a dead stop on
the gravelled walk. “Jewish!” he
exclaimed. “You, Jewish!”
“Yes. We’re co-religionists, you
know.”
Only a gasp escaped Lipshitz.
Then, slowly, he found words. Bitter
words, sharp, biting words of de
nunciation. “You could let me stand
up there like that! You didn’t say
a word. You, you coward!”
Allan stood silent beneath the lash
ing words.
Lipshitz went on, his head thrown
back, a strange fire in his eyes. “Y ou
will go before that class, y ou will
stand before that class and tell them
what-you have just told me!”
“But say, old man,” this Allan had
not looked for, “I can’t do that. What
would my frat brothers say? What
about all my friends? What of mv
future? I’m majoring in engineer
ing, you know.”
Lipshitz did not answer. He be
gan to walk again, his hands clasped
behind his back. Automatically, Al
lan fell in step beside him. Thoughts
of a shattered future enfolded him
he ‘would be ruined, he would be
laughed out of college in his senior
year.
At the entrance to Waverly Hall
Lipshitz turned. The fire had gone
out of his voice and he spoke calmlv
quietly. “I, too, am majoring in en
gineering. But I would not have suc
cess at your price. No, I won’t say
anything more. I won’t even insist
on your telling anybody. If you are
content to go on as before, very well,
the matter is dropped. I will not
breathe it to a soul.” His full lip-
curled in contempt. “But,” he added,
“if there is a spark of Jewishness in
you, you will go of your own free will
to Professor Chalmers and tell him
what you have told me. (io refute his
Nordic theory!”
