The Southern Israelite Page 6 SALAMON OLIVER LEVINSON, Chicago attorney and author of the phrase “Outlawry of War,” has been suggested by the Manchester Guar dian to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, the awarding of which the Norwegian Parliament is soon to take up. MODIGLIANI, an Italian .Jewish artist, after having died penniless nine years ago in a Paris hospital, is hailed by critics today as the “most remarkable draughtsman of modern times, with pronounced individuality and a true classical style.” His works are now found in many muse ums and national galleries. M. ELEGENHEIMER, well-known Swiss Jewish architect, was one of the five architects chosen to design a new assembly hall for the League of Na tions. RIASANOFF, director of the Marx Institute, and Fersman, a physicist, were the two Jews elected vice-presi dents of the Russian Academy of Science. MR. BEN ALTHEIMER, banker and philanthropist, was honored at a dinner given by the New York com mittee of the National Jewish Hospi tal for Consumptives at Denver, on the occasion of his 30th anniversary as Treasurer of that Institution. Sev eral hundreds of telegrams and let ters were received by Mr. Altheimer from prominent Jewish leaders in dif ferent parts of the country. JOHN ROCKEFELLER, JR., re cently visited Jerusalem and voiced the hope that he will be able to make another visit when the museum which he has endowed will be completed. THE INDEPENDENT ORDER B’NAI B’RITH inaugurated a lodge recently in Shanghai, China. The B’nai B’rith lodges are now establish ed in countries throughout the world. DR. MAX WEINRICH, physiolo gist and general secretary of the Yid dish Scientific Institute at Vilna, ar rived in New York, and was met by representatives of the American Insti tute and by a number of Jewish writ ers. Dr. Weinrich will lecture at Johns Hopkins University, where he was in vited by Prof. Blondheim. PROF. ALBERT EINSTEIN’S bust, by the Jewish sculptor Isenstein, was unveiled March 14th, the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Einstein. This bust was acquired by the Prus sian Government and will be placed at the Einstein center in Potsdam. MR. REUBEN BRAININ, Dean of Hebrew Letters, sailed for South Af rica, where he has been invited by the South African Association for Jewish Colonization in Russia, to address the Association’s conference in Johannes burg on April 12th. Mr. Brainin will present messages from American Jew ish leaders in connection with new plans for relief work in Russia. LOUIS B. MAYER, motion picture magnate, with his wife and two daughters, was the guest of President and Mrs. Hoover at dinner at the White House. Mr. Mayer has been mentioned as President Hoover’s pos sible selection for the Ambassadorship to Turkey. MOUCHEUR, Minister of Public Works, recently opened a hospital in Paris, established by the Mathilda and Henri Rothschild Foundation. MURRAY GUGGENHEIM, of New York, made a gift of three million francs to the University of Paris. The Guggenheim family came originally from Alsace. The late DR. BENEDICT WEIS- MAN, a retired physician residing in Brooklyn, New York, left a bequest of $100,000 in the form of scholarships for Jewish students to the Hebrew University. COLONEL SAMUEL D. LIT died in Philadelphia in his sixty-third year. For the past forty years Col. Lit was active in welfare work in general as well as in the Jewish communities. THE INDEPENDENT ORDER B’NAI B’RITH dedicated the second Jewish chapel in a penal institution in the United States at the Ohio State Penitentiary. The first was established at Sing Sing. MR. ALBERT LEVY, treasurer of the Royal Free Hospital in London, recently contributed $250,000 to a fund for rebuilding the Hospital’s ma ternity department. The new depart ment is to be named for the Queen by her consent. ALBERT LEVY, of London, the Hon. Daniel Levy, speaker of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales and former editor of the maga zine “The Australian Hebrew,” and Menasseh Meyer, leader of the Jew ish community in the Straits Settle ment, were the three Jews on the New Years’ honor list in London upon whom knighthood was conferred. FELIX M. WARBURG was tender ed a dinner on the occasion of his forthcoming departure to spend the Passover holidays in Palestine. In his address, Mr. Warburg sharply ar raigned those who refuse to partici pate in the Palestine endeavor, de claring that they are dooming them selves and their children to spiritual poverty. MR. ROBERT MOND presented the sum of one million francs to the Chemistry Institute of Paris. Mr Mond is the brother of Lord Melchett the former Sir Alfred Mond.
