PAINTING OF POLISH JEWS’ HISTORY EXHIBITION IN WARSAW Warsaw, (J. T. A.)—The painting, “The Statute of Kalisz,” by the Po lish Jewish artist, Arthur Schick, was exhibited yesterday at the headquai- ters of the Jewish Art Society here. The opening of the exhibition took place in the presence of August Zal- eski, Foreign Minister, and personal representatives of President Moscicki, and Marshal Pilsudski. The painting depicts the scenes accompanying the grant of the famous privilege to the Jews of Poland by King Boleslaw the Pious in the thirteenth century. On the canvas there are other scenes in the history of Polish Jews since that date. The painting was previously ex hibited in Paris where it attracted wide attention. Recently it was shown t„ Marshal Pilsudski at his home, when he expressed the wish to acquire the painting, adding that the artist has contributed greatly toward a Po lish-Jewish understanding. SABBATH OBSERVANCE IN PALESTINE. ORTHODOX LEADER SAYS ON RETURN Paris, (.J. T. A.). Religiously Pal estine is the only country on the face of the globe where the Sabbath is observed as a national day of rest, declared Harris L. Selig, formerly ex ecutive director of the Yeshiva Col lege campaign fund which raised $3,- 000,000 for the erection of the Yesh iva College building in New York City. Mr. Selig is here on his way back to the United States following a tour of European countries and Palestine. He is accompanied by Mrs. Selig. Sabbath in Palestine is a dav of in spiration. Old and young fill the syn- agogues, Mr. Selig stated to the cor respondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency here. In the Diaspora, J u d. aism is a matter of individuals, the community as such is not supreme In Palestine the community is Jewish in every respect. The action or the behavior of the individual is of minor importance, Mr. Selig stated. FRENCH JEWISH STUDENTS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST P(). LISH ANTI-SEMITIC PROFES SOR; ALL STUDENTS JOIN DEMONSTRATION Paris, (J. T. A.)—Two hundred Jew ish students left the lecture hall in a body as a demonstration against Pro fessor Lots of Warsaw University, who had been invited to lecture at Montpellier University. Professor Lots is known for his anti-Semitic ac tivities and for his advocacy of a numerus clausus for Jewish students admitted to the Polish institutions of learning. When Professor Lots came into the large lecture hall of the Montpelliei University to begin his lectures, the two hundred Jewish students rose and left the hall. When their non-Jewish fellow students were informed of the reason for the demonstration, they too, rose in a body and filed out. Only a few professors remained to hear the lecturer. F.
