Broad'$t. < Oppo.it* Rich's) Well, the Daughters of the Ameri can Revolution is probably the most re-actionary organization in American life. Last year it wrote itself down as stupid and as re-actionary as the Ku Klux Klan when it broadcasted a black list that was a disgrace to itself. This year it could not again face the wave of ridicule so the Daughters contented themselves by asserting that some school teachers are planting the seeds of communism in the country, that every teacher should be forced to take the oath of allegiance, that more crim inals should be deported—of course, aliens. But I haven’t yet seen any thing condemnatory of the oil scandals and other such incidental trifles. The I). A. R. may take itself seriously hut thank God the rest of the country does not. These estimable ladies who un doubtedly mean well should really re sume their household duties. I am afraid that the weight of dignity they carry with them because they are the daughters of some plain, old-fashioned Americans, is turning their heads. I see where the worthy Cardinal O’Donnell has attacked Einstein. It seems that the Cardinal doesn’t think much of Einstein or his theory and he says so in a very nasty way. Which, to say the very, very least, is unbe coming in a Cardinal. I never knew that Cardinal O’Donnell was such an eminent scientist as he gives one to believe, and thus far I have not dis covered any new evidence to make me change my opinion. Rut what puzzles me is, why the attack? Surely, a Prince of the Catholic Church would not attack the discovery that has created a sensation in the world of science, just because the new theory was presented by a Jew? Yet it seems so strange that he talks in a rambling sort of way about this new theory as being atheistic, and that in some queer way it threatens Christianity? I scarcely believe that the Prince of the Church need worry about the Ein stein Theory threatening anyone or anything because thus far no one seems to understand it, least of all, the Cardinal himself. Strange, isn’t it, how some churchmen will insist on discussing things they know so little of? Rut I am sure the dear old ( ardinal can sleep comfortably. He need have no fear that the amiable and kindly disposed Einstein is hatch ing another international menace against the Catholic Church. Rabbi Morris Litchenstein, leader and founder of Jewish Science, has asked me to publish the following let ter written by him to Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. Rabbi Lichtenstein thinks it will be of much interest to my readers. In view of the fact that from time to time readers have asked for informa tion on the subject of Jewish Science I am willing to give up a part of the column to this communication: “Dear Mr. Wise: “Last Sunday morning from your pulpit, you criticized Jewish Science, in rather violent fashion. You not only assailed its philos ophy of life, but also endeavored to impress upon your hearers the idea that Jewish Science is neither a Jewish nor a religious movement. I, as you know, am the founder of this movement and the spiritual head of the Society of Jewish Science I therefore consider it my duty not to let your unwarranted attack pass unchal lenged. “This is the third time, to my knowledge, that you have thought it your duty to speak disparag ingly of Jewish Science from your pulpit. It is indeed your privilege to denounce things which you consider to be wrong. But it is not within your right to make things appear wrong in order to he able to denounce them. This is exactly what you have done in your criticism of Jewish Science. You have not, it is clear, studied its principles, nor even casually acquainted yourself with its teachings, for you have con founded its philosophy with that of another religious movement, and have unjustly accused it of denying the reality of sickness, sin, worry and fear. “I feel that you have done our movement a great injustice; you have first misrepresented it, and on the ground of that misrepre sentation you have tried and con demned it before our people. I therefore challenge you to a pub lic discussion on Jewish Science, and it is my aim to prove to you that Jewish Science is not only compatible with the Jewish faith, hut that it is the very essence, the very soul, of our religion. “Jewish Science is indeed not satisfied with merely rhetorical preaching, or with vague gener alities about religion, but insist? on applying the tenets of Judaism to daily experience. It shows how the ills of life can be conquered through an attitude of faith in Divine Help. And it is my deep conviction that if we were to eliminate this aspect of our re ligion, our religion would become but a shadow’ of the past, without efficacy in the present. In fact, I contend that religion has no other function than that of helping man in his daily life. “The organization which I rep resent, as well as I, resent your attacks, particularly because you pretend to speak in the name of Judaism. Y r ou claim that what you said was the answ’er of Juda ism. I w’ish to remind you that tere is nothing in Jewish Law to support your antagonism to Jcw- ish Science; w’hile, on the other hand, there is ample ground. 8 whole tradition, in fact, to sustain its teachings and practices. I, too. am a rabbi in Israel. I, too. am qualified to represent and inter pret our faith. As our views dif fer so widely on a subject so v ’* tai (Continued on page 12>
