The Southern Israelite Page 23 j eW is not so much unfitted as unac customed, and which therefore he is reluctant to undertake. There are, of course, a fair number of Jewish clerks, and Jews may be found in the fitting shops or workshops, where pumps, rock drills, electric locomotives and other gear are fitted and kept in order. That the Jew is anxious and willing to take a part in actual production is proved by the fact that quite a num ber of small syndicates are run by Jews for working coal mines. Financially Jews play a very promi nent and a very important part in the development and exploitation of the mineral resources of this country. One has only to mention names like that of Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, M. L. A., a prominent member of the directorate of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., Chairman and Permanent Director of the Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa, Ltd., comprising the Springs Mine, the West Springs, Brak- pan, Daggafontein and various coal, platinum and other base mineral work ings; Sir David Harris, head of De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd.; Sir George Alba, Bart., East Rand Pro prietary Mines, Ltd., Chairman and Managing Director in Johannesburg of the General Mining and Finance Corporation, Ltd., Chairman and Man aging Director of the West Rand Con solidated Mines, Ltd., and many oth ers, for the truth of this statement to become obvious. Direct ramifications of mining are countless pursuits among which may be included trading and inter-trading the sale of machinery and mining materials, of stationery, of provisions. In these, as may be expected, Jews come to the fore. Messrs. Hillman Brothers of Johannesburg and Durban who import and supply mining mate rials are among the richest Jews in South Africa. The whole of Johannes burg, in fact, is a subsidiary growth on the mines, and the whole of Jo hannesburg, they say, is in the hands of the Jews. For example, the Jo hannesburg Stock Exchange was closed on Rosh Hashanah this year tor the first time, and it is invariably closed on Yom Kippur. I he construction of dams, reser voirs, houses, hospitals, the leading of current from Victoria Falls, sani tation all arise out of the basic in dustry of South Africa, and with all of these, directly or indirectly, Jews are connected. Briefly the position with regard to Jews and mining in South Africa is this: on the financial side the Jew leads and controls; on the administra tive side he is capable and efficient; w hile on the technical side he has not >et proved his mettle. There are a few Jews, however, who have made K^od in this branch of the industry, too, and there is no doubt that in the course of time experience will show at the Jew can do real productive *ork when he puts his hand to it. —Copyright 1928 by the Jewish elegraphic Agency, Inc. UNTERMYER URGES PALESTINE REBUILDING Comments on Splendid Character of Jewish Immigrants in Homeland Pasadena, Cal.—Stimulation to the campaign of the United Palestine Ap peal in this city was provided by a statement of Samuel Untermyer, in ternationally noted lawyer of the firm of Marshall, Untermyer and Guggen- heimer, who urged the local Jewish community to participate in the fund raising drive for Palestine rebuilding. Mr. Untermyer, who has been ill for some time, is recovering his health at a resort in Pasadena. Declaring that the type of Jew who went to Palestine to rebuild the coun try is splendid human material for the reconstruction of any country, Mr. Untermyer urged that Jew’s take ad vantages of the opportunities offered by the Balfour Declaration. Mr. Un termyer, who was at one time Presi dent of the Palestine Foundation Fund, issued the following statement: “No movement is quite so impor tant to the reputation of the Jews of America and the w’orld. When we ac cepted the Balfour Declaration, we pledged ourselves to the development of Palestine as the Jewish Homeland. Our honor before the world is involv ed in carrying out that declaration, to say nothing of the gratification of the yearnings and ambitions of the down trodden Jews of Southeastern Europe to escape from their present persecu tion and to lead free lives in their an cestral home amid the traditions that are so dear to them. I visited Pales tine in 1927 and was tremendously impressed by the natural beauty of the country, the splendid character of the Jewish immigration, and the great strides they are making against al most seemingly impossible odds. To us they look for encouragement and support, and for our own sake as well as theirs, we dare not fail them.” HENRY FORI) BECAME A JEW ANTI-SEMITIC PAPER TELLS ITS READERS. Berlin, (J. T. A.)—The dissatisfac tion of the German anti-Semites with Henry Ford since his withdrawal of his anti-Jewish campaign last year found its climax in an article pub lished in this week’s issue of the “Wo- ehenschau,” the organ of former war lord Eric von Ludendorf. Ford has joined “the Palestine lodge” in Detroit and has become “an artificial Jew” the newspaper told its credulous readers. BRITISH JEWISH LEADERS AT- T’VD LONDON BUDGET DINNER London (J. T.
