RABBI ARYER LEIB BERNFELD,
well known Talmudic scholar, died in
Lemberg at the age of 90. Rabbi Bern-
feld, who was active in the Mizrachi,
Orthodox Zionist Movement, was the
author of many Talmudic works.
MONTE M. LEMANN, one of the
ten lawyers named by President Hoov
er to the National Law Enforcement
Commission to study failures of law
enforcement in the United States and
the shortcomings of judicial procedure
is one of the outstanding leaders of
the Jewish community in New Or
leans. Mr. Lemann is president of the
Louisiana Bar Association and a mem
ber of the Council of the American
Bar Association and the American
Law Institute and takes an active in
terest in the work of the United Pal
estine Appeal campaign in New Or
leans.
MRS. JOSEPH GOLDBERGER,
widow of the martyred Jewish scien
tist who succomed last year to dis
ease resulting with his experiments
on the cause and cure of pellagra,
which he discovered, showed a won
derful heroic spirit in begging the
privilege of representing her sex as
one of the volunteers to test the
theory of her husband when many
medical authorities disagreed. Her
splendid spirit was described in a re
port of a Congressional committee.
Congress, in its last session, voted
$125 monthly pension to the widow,
who with her three children were left
penniless after her husband’s death.
LORD DALMEY, the son and suc
cessor to the title of Lord Roseberry,
is a half-Jew, his mother having been
the former Hannah Rothschild, only
daughter of the Baron Meyer Roths
child. Lady Roseberry, however, did
not renounce her faith with her mar
riage, and throughout her life she
maintained an active part in Jewish
Welfare W ork. Her younger son, Neil
Promrose, who died in active service
during the war in Palestine, was said
to have taken a great fancy to his
mother’s religion. Prior to his death
he displayed an interest in the Zionist
movement and expressed the intention
of devoting himself to the Zionist
cause upon his return to England.
PRESIDENT HOOVER reiterated
his deep interest and sympathy for
Zionism and expressed his warm good
wishes for the continued success of
the development of Palestine as the
National Jewish Homeland, in an in
terview with Nahum Sokolow, Presi
dent of the World Zionist Executive,
whom he received at the White House!
Mr. Sokolow was also received by
Vice-President Curtis to whom he ex
pressed renewed appreciation for the
valuable service that he rendered to
the Zionist movement while a Sena
tor, in sponsoring the Palestine reso-

NATHAN LOWENSTEIN, former
well known jurist and former member
of the Austrian Hungarian Parlia
ment, died in Poland at the age of 71
He was the leader of the so-called
Assimilationist group in Polish Jewry
It was during the trial of Stanislaw
Steiger, the Jewish student who wa<
charged with conspiracy against the
life of the president of the Polish Re
public, that Lowenstein, in a critical
moment, uttered a phrase which
became famous in Poland. Pleading
for his client, he turned to the tribu
nal, declaring, “I, an aged man, in the
face of the majesty of death, declare
my belief in Steiger’s innocence and
appeal to you for his acquittal.’’
MR. BEN A ROY A, a Jewish teach
er, has invented and perfected a steno
graphic system in the Turkish langu
age. This is another step forward in
Turkey’s process of westernization,
and the system has been adopted for
recording the proceeding of the Turk
ish Parliament. In recognition of his
service to the country, the Turkish
government has presented Ben Aroya
with a special certificate of merit.
JULIUS C. MORGENTHAU, broth
er of Henry Morgenthau, former
United States Ambassador to Turkey,
and distinguished as a philatelist and
stamp collector, died at the age of 71.
Regarded as the dean of philatelists
in America, he served as chairman of
the judges at the Philatelic Exhibition
in Cleveland last year, and was also
president of the Association of Stamp
Exhibitions.
