Jerusalem, August 25 (J. T. A.)— Saturday was the most critical day so far in the Moslem Arab’s attack on the Jewish population of Pales tine, bringing the total number of Jewish dead to 66. The number of those wounded, including many who received mortal wounds, runs into the hundreds, with no end of the racial conflict in sight. The greatest massacre perpetrated by the Moslem Arabs occurred Satur day at Hebron, the city of biblical fame, where 45 Jews were slain and 47 seriously wounded. In Hebron the casualties mounted high because of the lack of a Jewish self-defense body, the majority of the victims be ing pious Talmud students (Yeshiva bochurim) from various parts of the world, including many Americans, who were taken unawares in the famous talmudical academy transferred sev eral years ago from Slobodka, Lithu ania, to Hebron. Two rabbis affiliated with the academy, Rabbi Slonim and another whose name could not be as certained, are among the dead. In the absence of a Jewish self-defense body, the Jewish population of Hebron gath ered in the police court yard. The number of those who were slightly wounded is great. THE ATTACK ON TEL AVIV, MANY KILLED AND INJURED Martial law was proclaimed in Tel Aviv, the all-Jewish city and in Jaffa, the neighboring city with a mixed Arab Jewish population. A troop of 200 British soldiers was stationed at Tel Aviv. Seventy civilians were draft ed into the Tel Aviv police service. The Jewish population was moved from the outskirts to the center of the city. Six armored cars were ordered from Bagdad and more cavalry and infan try were asked from Cairo. It was impossible to ascertain the number of those killed and injured in Tel Aviv during the assaults and the defense on the border of Tel Aviv. The trouble started Sunday when the Moslem Arabs desired to march through Tel Aviv under the pretext of burying an Arab who was killed in the fighting, in the cemetery on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. A number of the Arabs attempted to break into the city proper. The British police fired. Six Arabs were killed. Fighting also took place in several quarters of Jaffa. Saturday night, a mob of Moslem Arabs attacked the government offices at Jaffa. The Brit ish police opened fire, repelling the attack.
