A.)— Tel Aviv, the first all-Jewish city of modern Palestine, was the center of an organized attack by the Moslem Arabs Sunday afternoon. The Jewish youth of this city offer ed armed resistance and met the as sailants who came from Jaffa, on the outskirts of the Jewish city. A fierce battle ensued which is still in prog ress. The local police, 100 percent Jewish, led in the defense. The first check showed 1 killed, 8 wounded slightly, 6 gravely. SIR HERBERT SAMUEL MAY AGAIN BECOME PALESTINE HIGH COMMISSIONER. London, August 20 (J. T. A.)- In an hour of political need the labor government of Great Britain has in vited the co-operation of two of the most distinguished British Jews who have rendered great services to the British Empire in administering her colonial possessions. Here’s a new one. In Pittsburgh it seems that the “Jewish Criterion” is used as a kind of Extension Course reading in connection with one of the local Sabbath Schools and copies of the papers are sent to the homes of the children. But it has been discov ered that a few, of course, a very, very few of the parents do not like to re ceive a Jewish paper because it adver tises the fact that they are Jews to the letter-carrier and to some of the neighbors. So they refuse the paper. If this be true, then it shows how abysmally ignorant they are. There are too many people who live for their neigbors. They spend to make an impression. And it seems that they are even ashamed of their religion for the neighbor’s sake. Dean Swift once said that “Vanity is a sign of humility” and for the longest time I couldn’t grasp the meaning of that statement. But when such incidents as I have recited began to come to my attention, I saw a new light in the “crazy” Dean’s saying. Jews who are vain enough to feel proud over the fact that they associ ate with certain Gentiles of social standing display the humility that Swift had in mind. The very fact that they can boast about such things and find satisfaction in them proves just HOW LITTLE THEY THINK OF THEMSELVES. If they had SELF- PRIDE they would not feel compli mented because somebody notices them. They infer by such an attitude that the other person is their superior and can confer distinction on them by merely associating with them. That’s putting a mighty cheap estimate on oneself! I would be ashamed to do it. In Palestine the Communist group called for an overthrow of British Im perialism. That incident is likely to evoke some very unjust criticisms against all the Jew’s of Palestine. And it will be avidly seized upon by un friendly interests in England to show the lack of gratitude of the Jews for the opportunity that Great Britain has given them. The trouble is that a drop of ink colors a glass of water. A few Jews who are Communists, in the eyes of our enemies, color all Jews Red. That is a price we have to pay for being a minority. Among the ma jority we find every kind of human, but they are considered as individual units, but with the minority, all are classified together and not according to their best, but their w’orst. I am fear ful that a great deal of trouble is go ing to come out of Jerusalem because of radical speech and action. Haven’t the Jews enough troubles in Palestine without encouraging more through ad mittance of Communists? Why don’t they send them back where they came from? As this is written the situation in Palestine is exceedingly grave. I am not inclined to say, “I told you so,” but the temptation is present in view* of the fact that years ago I predicted that with Mohammedans and Jews so keenly sensitive on religious rites and ceremonies—and each sensitive as to their respective rights, must sooner or later clash. When we consider that the Arabs have been nursing resent ment against the Jews because of the fear of being dispossessed, one can easily understand that the political leaders of the Arabs might seize a re ligious pretext for starting a war on the Jews. The Arabs own the ground on which rests the remnant of Solomon’s pie used as a Wailing Wall by the Jews. The Arabs, however, do not di*. pute the right of the Jews to hold thei r services there. But nearby is the Mos. lem Shrine of the Mosque of 0ma r And between the two groups there ha< been constant friction. A year ar there was serious trouble because the Arabs objected to the Jews using th? screen which separates the men and women at service, contending that it was an undesirable and unwarranted obstruction and interfered with them. This caused rioting and disorder. The Jews claimed that they should be pro- tected in their worship. And the local administration in Palestine was criti cized for lack of consideration of these religious rights of the Jew. The mat ter was carried even to England. F.v Pr since there has been smoldering hate between the two groups which was fanned into a fierce flame when the local authorities gave the Arabs per mission to begin building operations near the Wailing Wall but with the distinct understanding that they would not in any way interfere with the Jews at their services. At this point I wish to say that con sidering the acuteness of the situa tion and the feeling that prevailed, the authorities used extremely bad judg ment. For no sooner did the Jew? hear of the ruling than they became very much incensed and trouble wa? imminent, from the very outset. The result was most disastrous. Great Britain being responsible for the country under the mandate degree of the League of Nations will probably invoke the military to stamp out the spark of a serious uprising. What will develop no one can tell, but one thing is certain that the Zionist lead ers who ridiculed the idea that the Arabs were to be feared or that the Jews and the Arabs would not live peaceably together, were not hone?: with themselves or their people. It has been evident to even a cursory ob server that the Arabs would not ac cept the establishment of a Jewish homeland without a fight. I am glad that wide publicity wa> given through the “Literary Digest of Rabbi Isaac Landman’s address be fore the Intercollegiate Student Chris tian Conference at Eagles Mere, Penn sylvania.
