The British officials were helping to make the Mufti very popular before the elections; in return the Mufti would later, when he would be the true master of the country, refrain from incommoding the British. It was a political means of insuring rec iprocity.” The following is von Weisl’s de tailed description of the events which took place at the Wailing Wall on the ninth of Ab, August 15th, and the days thereafter. These events are held as of the utmost importance, as they help to determine who was responsible for the beginnings of the bloody events of the days that fol lowed. “On the ninth of Ab, ten thousand Jews marched in solemn procession to the ancient Wall whose corner stone may have been laid by King Solomon. Silently the marchers strode past the beloved Wall beside which stood and lay worshippers in rent garments, lamenting the destruc tion of the Temple through the night. In the other capital of Palestine, Tel Aviv, another ten thousand Jews as sembled and demanded the removal of the anti-Jewish officials of the ad ministration. “The reply of the administration was quickly forthcoming. The Mufti demanded a permission for a Moslem demonstration before the Wailing Wall. If three hundred Jewish youth could go there on the afternoon of the ninth of Ab, carrying a banner veiled in crepe and singing the Jewish national hymn, then his Moslems must also be allowed to approach the Wall. Otherwise he could not prom ise to maintain order. “Had Field Marshal Lord Plumer still been in Jerusalem he would have informed the Mufti that he, Lord Plumer, would attend to the preser vation of order. According to the government’s statement two thousand Arabs ‘visited’ the holy site of the Jews; a table was broken ‘by the pres sure of the crowd,’ and Jewish prayer books were burned. The next day the administration reported Jerusa lem quiet. “This communique represented the government's attempt to calm public opinion; but the government did not succeed. It lied as brazenly as if it were staging a World War. Thus its report declared that it was false that Jews had been beaten in the course of this ‘visit.’ But I myself, reaching the place immediately after the de parture of the Arabs, heurd the tes- (Continued on Page 29) A Happy and Prosperous New Year To Our Many Friends and Patrons SUPREME PENNSYLVANIA QUALITY r SAFE lubrication Whenever we drain a crankcase and refill it with Pennzoil, we know that Pennzoil and that motorist are going to be friends for life.
