Observers witnessing the rush to the Temples will be convinced that Judaism possesses irresistible strength in this country. But appearances are no less deceitful in this instance than in many others. The mere presence of hosts of worshippers on the New Year and Yom Kippur is by no means a guarantee of the vitality and persis tence of Judaism. If the same observ ers entered the synagogues a few weeks later, they would be appalled at the paucity of the attendance. The modern world is hectically pur suing other objections than what the traditional church and synagogue of fer. The fault must be charged not to religion, but to the Zcitycixt. Liberal Judaism has a unique oppor tunity to lead a spiritual renaissance in the modern world. Edmond Fleg wisely remarks in his brochure: “Why I am a Jew,” that Judaism does not ask thinking men and women to ab dicate their reason. Not only is it a rational faith, it preaches unflinching ly the message of social justice. If taken seriously, it cultivates aesthetic appreciation through the medium of ceremonialism and religious pagean try. But Liberal Jews, its alleged adher ents,, fall pitifully short of the high in junctions placed upon them by their religious system. They are willing to point to their beautiful Temples as a monumental token of their own re ligious attachments, but once these buildings arise, they turn their at tention elsewhere for amusement. Lib eral Jews for the most part leave the championship of the Jewish cause to the professional synagogue and com munal leaders. They read next to no Jewish books, fearing that too much attention “to one subject” will cramp their intellectual horizon. The hour has come to search the Jewish soul once more. Liberal Juda ism must remain, but Liberal Jews must rededicate themselves to it with unflinching zeal if Jewry is to remain intact. Measuring Results MILTON K. K \ll\. Prendrnl Men's ( Inh Temple llelli Israel. Portland. Ore. In an age of uncertainty of values and of losing sight of fundamentals, there appears a challenge to the mod ern spirit of the Brotherhood move ment. Thinking men sense a breaking away from the real and the true, and the substitution of the cheap and the tawdry. No field of human aspirations seems free from this blight. In organized religion this breaking down process is slowly, steadily and consistently going on. It here becomes evident and shows itself by trying to make the synagogue a glorified substi tute for those cheap forms of pseudo uplift and service so blatantly put forth week in and week out by groups of simple-minded individuals just be coming dimly conscious of a slight mental and spiritual awakening. It is not necessary for the syna gogue to place itself in competition with these organizations in which ram pant mediocrity is enthroned and em powered. The synagogue is real, the other false; the Synagogue lasting, the other fleeting; the synagogue a bearer of a true message, the other a platitudi nous shouter. While there may be some temptation to bring the many within the life-giving influence of the synagogue by whatsoever means may be at hand, such a consession would be a sad surrender, a losing sight of the high spiritual values which Ju daism has to offer to a sorely tried world. Ear better it is to hold fast to that fine heritage which has come down to us from the ages past, even though at times it may seem that only a rem nant stands firm, than to assume the motley and to have multitudes at our call. No, the most important thing is not to have the synagogue thronged and peopled with great numbers but that the synagogue continue to hold itself truly worthy of such a devotion, even though its message comes at times on ly to the few and faithful. Then will Judaism serve its real purpose not by descending but by raising up of those that come within the sound of its true voice. For this ideal the Brotherhood should gird its loins and go forward resolutely and proudly. Amery States Views on Palestine Situation Toronto (J. T. A.)—The Rt. Hon. Leopold H. Amery, Secretary of State in the Baldwin cabinet, who is now on a visit to Canada, addressed the Empire and Canadian Clubs here yesterday on Great Britain’s work in the middle East. Speaking of Pales tine, the former cabinet member de clared: “Palestine presents a difficult prob lem. We have obliged ourselves to as sist the Jews to develop the land and make of it their home, at the same time without prejudice to the Arabs. We intend to stand by the Balfour Declaration. The recent uprisings in Palestine are most regretable, revolv ing about the Wailing Wall. There will naturally be an inquiry and the persons responsible for the outbreaks and the tragic murders of innocent people will be punished. "The differences will eventually be cleared up and there is reason to be lieve that both Jew and Arab will live amicably there. Religious out breaks of this nature in the. East should not make us pessimistic. The religious ardor of the Eastern peoples is extremely warm and it does not require much to set their passion aflame, with consequent revolts and bloodshed, he declared. | To Our Many Friends | and Patrons Our Wi»h for a Happy and Prosperous New Year MOTOR CARS E.
