The Lnllav in com pared to man's spinal column. As the Lullav must be erect, so must man keep himself ethically and morally erect. The Myrtle is compared to the eyes. An the Myrtle must, be clear, no must the human vision ever be kept clear for the hip her idealism in life. The Willow in compared to the mouth. Just an this species is needed in the observance of the Festival, so must the human month be ready always to utter praises in the worship of Dirty. Lev. Rabbah 30: 13. The tree from ivhich Adam and Eve. ate was a citron tree. Gen. Rabbah 15: 9. The numerical value of the letters forming the Hebrew word 'Lullav’ is (58. Adding the other three species we have a total numerical value of 71, corresponding to the 71 members of the Sanhedrin. Mateh Moshe. The four species must be shaken toward all four directions, signifying that we acknowledge the Omnipotent who fills the whole universe every where. Sukkah 37 b. The Rarnbam wrote: “When it is well with a man, he should remember his evil days and increase his praise of the Lord. By leaving his house and dwelling in a Succah, a man will learn meekness and humility.” It is interesting to note that the sacrificial offerings decreased in number with the passage of each Suk- koth day. On the first day, 13 oxen were sacrificed; on the second day, twelve; on the third, eleven; on the fourth day, ten; on the fifth, nine; on the sixth, eight; on the seventh, sev en. These, added together, total 70,— the number of nations traditionally said to exist. From this we leant that, just as the number of sacrifices de creased each day, so will 70 nations gradually decrease their opposition to Israel's monotheistic idea, until the day will come, as the prophet hath said, when “The mountain of the House of the Lord will be establish ed on the summit of the hills, and all the nations will flow to it. And they will say: ‘Come, let us ascend the mountain of the God of Jacob and walk in His ways'.” Passover, Shabouth and Sukkoth were established in honor of the three Patriarchs,—Abraham, Isaac and Jac ob. Passover in Abraham's behalf, as it is said (when the three angels came to Abraham) : “Hasten and prepare cakes;” (the angels visited Abraham on Passover). Shabunth in Isaac's be half because the Shofar, ivhich was sounded on Pentecost when Israel re ceived the Torah, reminds us of the ram's horn that saved Isaac. Sukkoth in Jacob's behalf, as it is said: “And for his cattle did he build booths.” Pirke de It. Eliezar. The shelter of the Succah teaches us that God will shelter Israel if they will make atonement on Yom Kippur and enter life’s succah “ivith a new heart and a new spirit.” The Succah must be built under the canopy of heaven, with nothing inter vening between the covering of the Succah and the sky. This teaches us: “Gaze up to the heaven and the heav en of heavens! Remember who created thee and take upon thyself the yoke of heaven!” There are three days in the year when a single ox was offered as a sacrifice. Those days were Rosh Has- hanah, Yom Kippur, and Shemini Az- erct. Just as these days are similar in point of sacrificial offerings, so are they similar in ethical value. On Rosh Hashanah we resolve to lead better lives; on Yom Kippur we atone for our sins; on Shemini Azeret we be gin to apply to life the fine spiritual inspiration engendered by the Holy Days. Thus Shemini Azeret becomes the final instrument that impels us to give ourselves over to higher motives, to better living and to worthwhile ideals. , Direct from the Style Market to Southern Merchants COATS - SUITS - DRESSES NEW YORK STOCK HOUSE W hole sale Ladies Ready-to-wear 176 PRYOR ST., S. A.)—Seventeen hundred refugees are being fed in the Straus Health Center and the soup kitchens, in addition to the 1200 regu lar recipients, the Zionist Executive reported in a cablegram dispatched to Nathan Straus, American philanthro pist. Eight hundred are receiving meals at the Straus kitchen in the Old City. Immediately after the riots the Health Center sheltered about 500 refugees, principally from Hebron. They have since been evacuated to other public buildings. Preparations are now being made for a day nur sery in the Center for about 100 ref ugee children. C. ARTHUR KITCHINGS President Season's Greetings M. KUTZ COMPANY WHOLESALE MILLINERY CONSIDERATION OF JEWKn COMPLAINT LAST ACT OF Bp TIRING AUSTRIAN GOVERN MENT . . . ' , c act of the resigning Austrian government was a reply given by it to a complaint of the Union of Austrian Jews j n re gard to the action of some resort communities barring Jewish guests In the government reply made pub lie today, signed by the Vice-Chan cellor, it is declared that the action of resort municipalities barring Jew ish guests is unconstitutional and that the Union should lodge complaints against such communities with the proper administrative organs. I n re gard to anti-Semitic utterances bi- certain societies, the taking of neces sary steps depends on the determina tion of the proper authorities as to whether transgression against prevail- ing laws have been committed. The government therefore recommends that complaints along these lines be submitted to the instances dealing with these matters. The communication further states that the government is not in a posi tion to issue a general order concern ing anti-Semitic actions by the resort communities, as only the courts are competent to determine whether the refusal of anti-Semitic owners to house Jewish guests is contrary to law. The formation of a cabinet under Shober is considered likely today, the guarantee of law and order in the country is expected to be the first set of the new cabinet.
