Vet, as Jews, we need not and dare
not be weighted down by the burden
"f sorrow for things which were left
undone, for ideals which still remain
unrealized. Hope springs eternal in
the human breast, but more especially
in the Jewish breast. “Hope in the
bird, be of good cheer”, is the eternal
message of our faith; “be not af
frighted, neither be thou dismayed;
for the Lord thy God is with thee
whithersoever thou goest”. So firmly
hopeful were our saints and sages in

Lord, that when they first edited the
Bible they saw to it that every one of
its component parts should end with
some consoling and cheering verse.
And hope also is the main message
of this our sacred season, despite our
personal disappointments, notwith
standing the cloud of sorrow which
has lately overcast the bright sky of
our co-religionists on the soil of our
Patriarchs and Prophets. Israel re
mains unafraid. He lived, he lives
and he will live on until, as we are
confident, the Kingdom of God will
be established on earth, and his self-
assumed divine task will be complet
ed. But hopeful as we are, we must
not be forgetful of our duties as mem
bers of the household of Israel. God
does not desire the death of the sin
ner, but the sinner must return to
Him that he may live, such is the
assurance of our sacred scripture.
And to live is more than simply to
number days and months and years
by the pleasures we have indulged
ourselves in, or by the material pos
sessions we have enriched ourselves
with. “Let not the strong glory in
his strength; let not the wise glory
in his wisdom; but let him that glories
glory in this, that he knoweth and
understandeth Me”, thus sayeth our
Prophet in the name of God; and our
Proverbs repeat: “The beginning of
wisdom is the fear of the Lord”, or,
as a modern sage put it: “The soul
of education, is the education of the
soul”. It was for such a life of wis
dom and understanding that Moses
our teacher, or whoever composed the
ninetieth Psalm, prayed. It is to such
a life of wisdom and understanding
that we are highly to resolve to ded
icate and to consecrate ourselves in
the year and years to come. And if
this be our resolution we need fear
no evil. The Guardian of Israel who
has kept faith with us in the past will
surely keep faith with us in the fu
ture. Aye, He will keep us and He
will bless us, and He will cause us
to rejoice and be glad all our days.
