Macon, Georgia 4 x / 2 % ON SAVINGS OPEN FROM 9 TO 5 * Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement On Sunday evening, October 13, 1929, the Jewish people will begin its celebration of the Day of Atonement, known in Hebrew as “Yom Kippur,” with most solemn religious services. The services will open with the tradi tional melody of Kol Nidre which will mark the beginning of the most sacred and solemn day of the Hebrew calen dar. The entire day is observed by all Jews with grave concern; it is de voted to fasting, prayer, meditation, repentance, and forgiveness. This Holy Day, therefore, carries an inval uable religious message to mankind at large, as well as to the Jewish people. In the days of the Temple, an elab orate sacrifical ritual constituted the chief form of observance of the Day of Atonement. The people filled the Temple courts. The High Priest came before the altar garbed in his priestly dress. At first he uttered a confession of his own sins and the sins of his household and prayed for pardon and remission; then he cited a confession of the sons of the priesthood and beg ged forgiveness; finally he read a con fession of the sins of the entire Jew ish people and invoked the God of Justice and Mercy for forgiveness. This ceremony impressed the people and filled them with awe and rever ence; its purpose was to bring them to a state of repentance and atone ment. With the disappearance of the Racn . fical ritual from Jewish life, the D • of Atonement rose in sacredness ami holiness. Prayers came to substitute the sacrificial offerings; meditation* took the place of the confession maH* by the High Priest of old. Repentant and contrition, reconciliation and f or giveness came to be emphasized more and more by the Rabbis. According to Jewish tradition, the Day of Atone ment marked the day upon which G<*j sealed the final decree of every crea ture of the world who had passed be- fore Him in judgment on New Years Day. It was therefore set aside as a day of fasting and special prayers and supplications. This idea constitut ed the keynote of the Day of Atone ment throughout the Middle Age. Whatever the message of the Day of Atonement in ages past, today it stands in Jewish life as a day of the soul sanctification. The idea of ret rospection and introspection which permeate the liturgy of this Holy Day brings man to contemplate his pur pose in life and to meditate on the values of Judaism which serve to sanctify and ennoble human life. Meetings of Commission Will Not Be Public, But Commiques Will Be Issued British Parliamentary Commission Of Inquiry Hords Meeting in London Before Sailing for Palestine Commission are necessarily confined to an inquiry into the immediate causes of the recent outbreak, it is stated that at a later stage of its work, the Commission will also inquire into the wider aspects of the problem, occupying itself with the broader rea sons for the recent outbreak. In London official circles, it is reit erated that in any case the British government w’ill enforce and uphold the terms of the Balfour Declaration, there being no queston of any retreat from that position. The recent press rumors concerning England’s intention to give up the Palestine Mandate or permit its re version to Italy, the United States or Poland are regarded as gossip which is unfounded and absurd. London (J. T. A.)—The British Par liamentary Commission of Inquiry, appointed by the Colonial Office to investigate the causes of the recent outbreak in Palestine, held a meeting here on Monday prior to its departure for Palestine on October 3. The diplomatic correspondent of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency under stands that the meeting was confined to a consideration of the question of procedure and that questions of policy were not dealt with. It appears that the question of procedure is consider ed sufficiently intricate and it is stat ed that the Commission decided that the British officials in Palestine first collect the evidence which will be placed before the Commission on its arrival. \\ hen the Commission will start functioning in Palestine, evi dence will again be taken from both Jewish and Arab sources. The prelimi nary’ collecting of evidence was found necessary in order to secure first hand information as near the date of oc curence as possible. The meetings of the Commission will not be public, but communiques will be issued from time to time, it being anticipated that the Commission will make declarations while still in Palestine. \\ hile the terms of reference of the At a press conference at Zionist headquarters here Dr. Selig Brodet sky member of the Executive Comm- tee of the Jewish Agency in of the political work, made the o lowing statement.
