I gladly avail myself of the oppor tunity offered me by the editor of the Southern Israelite to extend a word of greeting as the New Year approaches. No festival celebrated by any people on earth can be compared to the Jewish New Year in its uniqueness. For it celebrates not the occurrence of an ordinary event in the history of a particular people, such as a military victory on the birth of an individual however great; it is the anniversary of the creation of the entire universe, according to our ancient tradition, and, what is equally important, the re-creation of the hu man soul. One readily recognizes the mighty significance of the Holiday when he realizes that it is thus bound up with the deepest emotions and lof tiest hopes of human-kind. That life with its victories and de feats, its joys and its miseries, its hopes and its desires, is at best un certain has been vividly and, alas, tragically illustrated in the life of Israel during the last months of 5089. How thrilling was the message that issued forth from Zurich that after years of quarreling and haggling and bitterness World Jewry became unit ed upon a plan of action in behalf of our ancient Homeland. Peace at last reigned in Israel. All Jews, irrespec tive of their attitude towards Zionism, were to labor for Palestine. Hut we were not destined to rejoice for long. Our ecstatic joy was turned to bitter mourning; our high hopes were dash ed to the ground; our gladdened hearts became seared with inexpressible pain. The brutality and fury of un governable passion within a few days destroyed Jewish homes, mutilated and slew Jewish men, women and children, blasted Jewish hopes, undid what years of toil had accomplished. Once more Rachel is mourning for her chil dren. Shall the setback which Palestinian Israel and world Israel suffered dis courage us ? Shall we throw down our weapons of construction and feebly ask: “What’s the use?” No, no! A thousand times, no! Israel has been Capital $150,000.00 B. H. Wright, Chairman of the Board R. G. Defeated, yes! But vanquished? Thank God, never! The blood of pronh ets and sages, of Psalmists and sing ers still courses in our veins. N or ha* we ceased to produce Maccabees who will defend the property, the ljf e and the honor of our people. The J e * knows how to live: he has demon- strated time and again that he know, how to die, if need be, for an ideal RABBI JULIUS MARK Each New Year brings with it a New Beginning. Phoenix-like Israel will rise from the smoking ashes and bring new blessings to mankind, We have not forgotten how to dream of, and pray for, the welfare of all the children of men. Weaklings are em bittered by defeats; strong men are ennobled by every obstacle. May such strength be ours in the Year. May Israel in every land and in every clime once more renew his loy alty to the faith of old at the altar of our God; may he never cease to hope or to toil until all the work will become what Jerusalem named to be, “A City of Peace.
