MAIN FLOOR In The Limelight NATHAN CAYTON, Jewish judge in the Municipal Court of Washing ton, brought down upon his head a veritable wave of Jewish indignation as a result of an address which he delivered charging that there existed a Jewish crime wave, and that Jews of America have produced far more than their share of criminals, thus failing to perform their duty as Jews and Americans. LOUIS S. GIMBEL, vice-president and co-founder with his brother, Isaac, of the Gimbel Brothers Depart ment Store, died recently in New York City at the age of sixty-three. Mr. Gimbel was bom in Philadelphia, and graduated from the University there. Arriving in New York in 1910, he founded the store which later de veloped into one of the largest de partment stores in the country. He is survived by his widow and two sons. RABBI ALKALAY, of Belgrade, was highly honored by King Alex ander, of Jugo-Slavia, in receiving the Kara George Star. The King is a persistent patron of cultural insti tutions, and the honor was conferred in connection with the publication of the recent Jugo-Slavian Jewish Com munities law. MRS. EGAR J. KAUFMAN, «f Pittsburgh, wife of Egar J. Kaufman, who recently gave $150,000 to the Y. M. and Y. W. H. A. presented the new Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh with $50,000 in honor of her father, Isaac Kaufman. The money will be used to establish a health center for group diagnosis where needy patients will receive the benefits of consulta tions and advices from all the physi cians on the hospital’s staff. Mr. JOSEPH SCHONTIIAL, who died December 15th at Columbus, Ohio, left the sum of $20,000 to or ganizations and activities in which the Union of American Hebrew Con gregations is interested. Mr. Schon- thal was a member of the board of managers of the department of Synagogue and School Extention of the Union, and was also the founder of the Jewish Infants’ Home, all in or near Columbus, Ohio. PROF. ALBERT MICHELSON, world famous physicist and Nobel Prize winner, resigned from the fac ulty of the University of Chicago where for years he had been head of the department of physics. In his letter of resignation Professor Mich- elson called attention to his recent illness and said his health forbade a continuance of his faculty duties. ALIAS M. EPSTEIN, general sec retary of the Jewish National Fund, while in New York recently declared that the Jews, by their purchase of land in Palestine, had paved the way not only for a Jewish renaissance but also for the emancipation of the Arab serf. PROF. JOSEPH REDLICH, noted Jewish scholar and at present an in structor at Harvard University, was given the unusual honor of being „ an honorary citizen of \ cently Prof. Redlich published a biog raphy of “Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria.” MISS PEARL GINSBERG of \ ew York, who at one time acto movies, is soon to marry Prince Mo hammed Ali Ibrahim, nephew of King Fuad of Egypt, according to a well- confirmed report. ABRAHAM E. PINANSKI of Brookline, noted Boston lawyer, has been named to succeed the late Judge Lourie on the Superior Court Bench. JUDGE MORRIS EIDER, Con gressman Samuel Dickstein, ex-Con- gressman Nathan D. Perlman, A. H Weisman, Dr. Leon N. Adler and oth er active workers are the newiv-elect- ed officials of the Jewish Court of Arbitration, the only chartered Jewish arbitration court in the state of New York. The purpose of the court is to settle civil disputes involving Jewish litigants. ASSEMBLYMAN IRWIN STEIN- GUT of Brooklyn has been elected minority leader of the New York State Assembly by a caucus of the Demo cratic members. The past was held un til recently by the late Maurice Bloch of New York. MENDEL BEILIS, victim of the famous blood libel case in pre-war Russia, is now confined to his bed be cause of paralysis of one leg. Maxim Gorky, noted Russian author, an nounced recently that he would pub lish shortly some amazing documents bearing on the Beilis case. JUDGE DAVID A. LOURIE. known as “faithful and honest Lou rie,” superior court judge, civic work er, Zionist leader and distinguished public figure, died in Boston at the age of 51. He was appointed to the bench in 1922 by Governor Cox and in 1924 was elevated to the Superior Court, the first Jew to be so honored. RABBI ABRAM SIMON of Wash ington, D.
