SOUTHEASTERN JEWRY ORGANIZES (Continued from Pape 6) He advised parents to have the young share in Temple problems and to give children a thorough acquaint ance with their religious traditions. Dr. Leo M. Franklin, Detroit, past president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, delivered the principal address of the convention on the subject, “To Be a Jew”. Looking Back “I am thinking of the Jew not quite comfortable and somewhat out of place in the midst of this industrial civilization of ours, his thoughts, his prayers turned back a thousand years,” he said. “Yes, if you will, four thousand years, to the days when his forbears dared to forevision a time when man to man would be as a brother, when nation to nation would be friends not foes, when the divinity of every man should be recog nized. JULIUS W. FREIBERG “The Jew of whom I am thinking is as real as any whom you know. He represents to me that saving rem nant through whom alone not merely Judaism but the ideals and hopes of humanity can be conserved. His type is the prophet. Men of this type have never been popular but they have kept civilization alive. They have been called impractical fools and dreamers but they have saved the world.” Mr. Vogelstein Speaks Ludwig Vogelstein, New York, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Union .spoke Monday morning on “The Union of American Hebrew Congregations”. “The Jews are the great miracle of history,” he declared. “A people at no time of political importance, which suffered repeated defeats, which was driven into exile, persecuted, ha rassed, massacred and cruelly mal treated by every nation with which it came into contact has survived the conquerors of the world, the most powerful states that have ever ex isted. “Not only have we survived phy sically but spiritually, too, as our re ligion has outlived the highest civi lization of antiquity. The truths pro claimed by our ancestors have be come the chief cornerstone of the present Western civilization which governs one-half the population of this planet. “To maintain and carry on all these activities,” he continued, in pointing out the services rendered by the Un ion, “requires the devoted co-opera tion of our loyal staff and the unself ish assistance of many men and women all over the country, but it also requires liberal financial sup port.” They Are The Grandchildren At the biennial Union conventions, present Western civilization which governs one-half the population of this planet. “To maintain and carry on all these activities,” he continued, in pointing out the services rendered by the Un- DR. LEO M. FRANKLIN he said, “we see the grandchildren of the men who stood at the cradle of the Union and we realize that the ‘Zechus Ovos*—the merit of our an cestors—is the blessing of this gen eration. • We have inherited this great edi fice for the perpetuation of Judaism in America which the two previous generations built up laboriously. It is our sacred duty to maintain and extend it to satisfy the needs of the present and future generations. “There is nothing more helpful to us in our standing in our communi ties and in our contact with our fel low citizens of different faiths than the high standards of religious life as promoted by the Union.” Mrs. Louis Switzer, president, Mis sissippi Federation of Temple Sister hoods, Vicksburg, Miss., gave “A Statement by a Sisterhood Represen tative”; Edwin Wise, Montgomery, Ala., “A Statement by a Brotherhood Representative”; Rabbi Isaac E. Mar- cuson, Macon, Ga., “Our Educational Obligation”; Mrs. Israel L. Kaplan, Jacksonville, Fla., “The Home”; and Dr. Harry W. Ettelson, Memphis, Tenn., "The School”. Bring Greetings The dinner at the Standard Club in Atlanta brought greetings from A. Leo Weil, Pittsburgh, in behalf of the Union; Mrs. Maurice Steinfeld, St. Louis, president of the National Fed eration of Temple Sisterhoods, in be- j half of the N. F. T. S.; and Charles i P.
