ble on its initial flight has conde
scended to participate in the festivi
ties, and by special arrangement by
radio with Commander Eckener, has
timed its arrival in Tel-Aviv to coin
cide with ours. We pull into the Tel-
Aviv station, which is a-bustle with
life, thousands of happy and carefree
relatives greeting us with deafening
applause. Overhead, the Graf is cir
cling and gliding through space,
haughtily, disdainfully, lowering her
self to within a few hundred feet of
the ground, as though anxious to
drop down into the boisterous merri
ment. The sun is sinking rapidly
away over in the Mediterranean, and
her last slanting rays play artistical
ly with the Zeppelin, manouevering
gracefully in the fading light. Shed
ding one last ruddy glow, the sun
disappears over the horizon, and sim
ultaneously the boat cabin of the
giant airship lights up with a star-
like illumination, and with a sharp
tilt of her proud nose, she turns her
slender body to the South. Gathering
speed, the gigantic monster makes
off in the direction of the Holy City,
followed wistfully by about eighty
thousand pairs of eyes . . .
Carried away by the tempestuous
torrent of humanity, I find myself in
the Allenby Road, the only decently
wide thoroughfare in the Garden City.
Illuminated by numerous hanging
electric lamps, the street is literally
alive with masqueradors in quaint
costumes. The eye wearies of con
centrating on the innumerable figures
of pierrots and pierettes, nigger min-
istrels. snappy sailors, Japanese maid
ens, Dutch peasants, and even fero
cious looking red Indians, at whose
sight the blood turns cold, and the
heart stands still. A ten year old
cowboy, his baggy sheepskins flap
ping in the wind, brushes past me
shooting his pistol high into the air.
An ancient Ford speeds through the
street, driven recklessly by a Maca-
bee, a group of tiny tots hanging on
precariously to its sides. Pistols fir
ing, banjoes twanging, sirens screech
ing, bursts of laughter, yells and
shrieks, Tel-Aviv is transformed into
a regular inferno. Dazzled by the
gorgeous display of fireworks whiz
zing and spinning in all directions, I
pass on to the Hertzl Street, the
Broadway of Tel-Aviv, and on the
way come to a full stop outside the
cinema “Ophir”, where “Ben Ilur” is
being shown. A huge crowd is lined
up outside in an unending queue, pre
pared to wait all night to gain admis
sion. A classical play is a feature of
importance, and is certain of drawing
the romantic populace in Tel-Aviv.
On through the Lillienblum Street,
and so into the famous Hertzl Street.
The white-painted buildings are deco
rated with strings of bunting, and
flaunt nobly and proudly the national
colors, the blue white interwoven tri
angles of the Jewish flag. On the
roof of a three-story building a dance
is in progress, and the peppy strains
of the latest jazz music sail down into
the street where they mingle discord
antly with the din and clatter of the
roysterers. The cafeterias are doing
a roaring trade, every table is occu
pied by merry parties of youthful ro
mance seekers, sipping in evident
contentment their sundaes and ices,
and smoking La Cigarette Egypti-
enne. Here and there, an enterpris
ing vendor of peanuts is attracting
attention to his humble pushcart,
which boasts of a varied assortment
of household requisites, rattles and
Megilahs being the more conspicuous,
on account of their seasonable value.
And then the languages. There is a
continuous flow of dialogue in this
truly cosmopolitan center. The gut
tural German drowns the more refin
ed French, while English vies with the
National Hebrew. Russian, Polish,
Spanish, and even Arabic is spoken in
this all-Jewish city. The din still
