d i Page 7 The Southern Israelite Feateres of Local Interest Hebrew Sisterhood Gives Luncheon \ hiirh light of the southeastern ition of the Union of Ameri can Hebrew Congregations was the luncheon given by the Atlanta sister hood Monday at the Standard Club in f Mrs. Maurice Steinfield, na tional president of the Federated Sis- s of the Union. In the prin cipal address of the afternoon Mrs. Steinfield explained the work of the sisterhood and its mission in bring ing religion into the home. Besides possessing unlimited information, Mrs. Steinfield is an able orator and her address was a source of inspira tion to her audience. Others on the program were Mrs. David Marx, who delivered the prayer; Mrs. Sam Scho- en, president of the Atlanta Sister hood, Mrs. Alfred Myers, president of the Council of Jewish Women, and Mrs. Ernst Horwitz, president of the Tri-State Sisterhoods. B’nai B’rith Has Meeting A Dinner Meeting of Gate City Lodge, No. 144 I. O. B. B. was held cently at the Jewish Progressive Club. Mr. I. Moscowitz, well known architect of this city, and a member of the Lodge, gave an interesting talk n “Architecture”. The delegates at the recent Convention of the 5th Dis trict Grand Lodge held at Baltimore, headed by Mr. H. A. Alexander, gave a report on the happenings of the Convention. All outstanding Com mittees made their reports, and the Committee on the “Alfred M. Cohen (lass”, which is to be initiated in the very near future, gave an account of its developments. President L. J. Levitas presided at the well-attend ed meeting. enrollment of the Hebrew School, which conducts classes in Bible Study and Hebrew at the Ahavath Achim Synagogue and also at the G. W. Smi ley School on North Avenue for north-side residents, elaborate plans were laid for an intensive drive. Of ficers for the ensuing year are to be Major R. L. Willner, President; Mr. Sam Gershon, Vice-President, and Mr. J. H. Rodbell, Treasurer. A Board of Directors was appointed also, consisting of thirty-six men and twenty women. Cantor A. Lipitz sang some beautiful Hebrew folk songs, accompanied by Miss Mollie Rittenbaum at the piano. Mr. Oscar Gershon also sang some beautiful operatic selections. Emory University News Meyer Tenenbaum, of Savannah, was recently elected secretary of the Independent Student Body of Emory. He is a freshman in the Law School, and also active in debating circles. David Gershon, senior in the Law School, recently earned his letter in debating by representing Emory against Loyola College, and which Emory won. Harold Rosenberg, senior in Law, has been elected vice-president of his class. Sam Zion, Sidney Parks, Charles Hoffman, and Bennie Goldstein have made basketball teams in their re spective classes. Alpha Epsilon Pi, Jewish Frater nity, was eliminated in the second round of the basketball tournament by the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. L ruled Hebrew School Elected Ralph L. Willner President Major R. L. Willner was elected president of the United Hebrew School at a meeting April 2. Sam Gershon was named vice-president a nd .1. H. Rodbell, treasurer. J. Fae- man was elected as head of the fi nance board. I’urim ball committee of the 1 reported a total of $3,245.78 -ed in the event. Miss Riley to Interpret Opera “Louise” for Council The Fifth District are to be the guests of the Council of Jewish Wo men at their meeting on Monday, April 21, at three o’clock at the new Standard Club, when Miss Helen Coyne Riley, of the Juillard Founda tion and head of the Atlanta Music Center, will interpret the opera “Louise,” to be given in Atlanta for the first time this season by the Met ropolitan Opera Company. Mrs. Frank Miller, music chairman for the Fifth District, will receive with the committee from the Council. B'nai B’rith Some 112 delegates representing several European districts as well as all seven districts in the United States, Canada and Mexico will be present when Hon. Alfred M. Cohen, Cincinnati, Ohio, international presi dent of the Independent Order of B'nai B’rith, calls to order the first session of the Thirteenth Quinquen nial Convention of that organization at the Hotel Sinton in Cincinnati on Sunday, April 27th.
