His colorful life and his mannerisms lend themselves to fine stories. For example there is the most recent one from Madrid, where he has been staying for the bull-fighting season. John Hays Hammond was introduced to Franklin at one of the high-class restaurants. Hammond looked closely at the rather handsome features of this Jewish boy and said that lie doubted that Franklin was a bullfighter. Which brought forth this explanation: ‘‘You just ought to see my face when a hull is trying to get me!” The lVarners Come Home There is much excitement in Lynch burg, Virginia, these days, on account of the announcement that Warner Brothers plan to invade the stat<; by the purchase of a chain of movie houses and that one of these will be located in Lynchburg. The one most excited is Moses Eichel- baum, which is only natural, since he is the uncle of the Warner Brothers—Al, Jack and Harry. Lynchburg is their home town. There arc still some residents of the town who can remember back thirty years ago when the Warner boys were hard working fellows who made a living by repairing shoes, peddling candy and fix ing bicycles. Now that the fame of Warner Brothers is to invade even Lynchburg Mr. Kichelbaum sadly recalls that many years ago his nephews offered him a share in their modest movie busi ness, hut he passed it up skeptically. Now, when the junk business is not so good, he wishes he had been more of an optimist. Did You Know That George S.‘ Kaufman, the playwright, will soon make his stage debut on Broad way in a leading role in “Once in a Life time,” of which he is one of the co authors ? The "Daily Herald” of London, the or gan of the British Labor Party, is now owned by Julius Elias and that under his ownership the paper’s circulation has in creased by 750,000 readers? George Jean Nathan regards Jed Har ris ‘‘as the American theatre’s most talented and most promising producer?” Justice Louis D. Brandeis is planning soon to announce some very large contri butions to Palestine causes? Isaac Goldberg is writing the life of George Gershwin and the story of tin-pan alley jazz, which will be published by a big house next fall? Julius Rosenwald of Chicago and Julius Goldman, the New York banker, as well as Ludwig Vogelstein, leader in the Union of American Hebrew Congrega tions, have thus far refused to make con tributions to the Allied Jewish Campaign on the ground that the cause of Palestine is included? That many years ago Dr. Stephen S. Wise rejected the pulpit of Temple Emanu-El of New York, considered the most important in the country, because he refused to let the board of directors dictate what he should say? (Continued from Page 5) Morris Hirsch Clinic The Clinic continues to function as the health unit of the Federation. It is operated on a non-sectarian basis. Every Jewish Clinic and Hospital else where is non-sectarian. The majority of the patients are non-Jewish. To this extent the Clinic performs a com munity and civic service. About 30 per cent are Jewish. During 1929 the ad ministration of the Clinic was reor ganized. The w r ord “FREE” was elimi nated. A charge of 25 cents is made for the first visit and 10 cents for every visit thereafter. The nursing service was reorganized. A new nurse was em ployed and a registrar was employed to take care of the clerical work and ad mission of patients. With the previous nurse ill for a few months, neverthe less the Clinic managed to carry on its usual functions. During 1929, 2,OCX) pa tients were treated, 52 T and A opera tions were performed, 197 eye exami nations were made, 386 nose and throat examinations were made, 392 cases of Diseases of Women were treated, 20 pre-natal cases were treated, 540 gen eral medical cases were treated, 284 children’s diseases were treated, 154 dental patients were treated, and 150 home visits were made. The Clinic owes its success to the efforts of the Medical Director, Dr. J. E. Sommer field, and the competent staff of volunteer physicians associated with him in this project of community health. However, there is one aspect of the Clinic which is very distressing to your Executive Director. On the stage an actor once asked what w’as the difference between vision and a sight. And the other an swered, "The girl I was out with last night was a vision. The girl you were out with was a sight.” If the work of the physicians and the Clinic Staff may be regarded as a vision, the Clinic building is a sight for sore eyes. When will that sight be made a vision? The Jnoish Education Alliance Viewed from the objectives of the Federation, the work of the Alliance may very well be put at the head of the list. It is not a charity. It is the self-respecting development of the com munity’s standards and facilities for the expression of its youth along recrea tional and educational lines. If the standards and facilities are not high and inadequate it is the fault of the community. We must educate the community to a realization of the needs for better facilities for whole some recreation. Studies everywhere point to the importance of the gymna sium and swimming pool in a pro gram of work with boys. Surplus en ergy must be worked off. But it must be guided into social channels or it will, and often does, take destructive forms. Atlanta’s greatest need is a modern Jewish Center. A place which will com bine the best features of a club, yet be open to the entire Jewish commu nity. A place which, architecturally, will be a cause for civic pride. A physical plant which will provide lodge rooms for adult societies, club and class rooms for social and educa tional activities, a large auditorium for dramatics, dancing, lectures, concerts, and other mass programs, and above all else facilities for work with boys.
