Blazing The Path
A lew weeks ago Julius Rosenwald was decorated by the Austrian
Government for assistance rendered by him to the needy of that
country. More recently the German Government expressed its
appreciation to Mr. Rosenwald through President Hindenburg when
t was revealed that Rosenwald had donated almost half a million
dollars to German charities before and since the war.
Albert M. Greenfield, prominent Jewish realtor of Philadelphia,
has also been the recipient of praise in recognition of his philan
thropy when he was made a Commander in the Order of Pius XI,
• first time an American Jew has received a Papal decoration,
t'atholic charities have received many gifts from Mr. Greenfield,
who has always responded just as loyally when a Jewish cause
applied for his aid. Christian and Jewish religious and communal
leaders throughout the world will recognize the Pope’s honoring of
Mr. Greenfield as expression of good-will toward the entire Jewish
race, as well as the marking of a new era in interreligious good-will.
With these two men as outstanding examples, it is gratifying to
now that so many of our American Jewish philanthropists are not
uiting their humanitarianism within the bounds of their own race
1 country, but cooperate without drawing sectarian lines. Tt is
representatives such as Mr. Rosenwald and Mr. Greenfield who are
indouhtedly blazing the path for international understanding and
'"rial brotherhood among the nations and of whom American Jewry
'b'add bear unlimited respect and pride.
Another Homeland ?
A plan to colonize Jews on a large scale in Peru is receiving a
great deal of attention in. Europe at the present time. More or less
official statements have been issued declaring that the Peruvian
Government is ready to set aside large tracts of land for Jewish
settlement and also to provide transportation facilities for Jewish
emigrants from Europe. The only obstacle in the way of Peruvian
Jewish colonization is money, which handicap might be removed.
Considering the sad plight of the Jews in many of the European
countries, as well as the restrictions on immigration quotas in the
United States, this plan might be a valuable solution to oppressed
Jewry. The situation of Jews in Poland is alarming, and the social
and economic discrimination in Rumania, while it does not equal the
Polish situation, is quite bad enough. Reports arc that the economic
standing of Jews in Russia is a tremendous problem. With this
calamitous information that is being circulated, it is not without
hope that we look to Peru as a substitute for America and South
Africa. If the question of money can be settled, it will mean the
salvation of the many thousands of would-be emigrants from East
ern F.urope who are knocking in vain at the gates of New York.
Stephen Wise, Jewish Ambassador
Jvwry in Poland is agonizing. The memoranda submitted to the

Anti-Semitism in Canada
The passing of the Jewish Separate School bill, which gives the
Jews a minimal representation on the Quebec Provincial Educational
Council, has aroused the ire of a large number of French-Canadian
Catholics. Special publications, whose sole aim it is to insult the
Jewish population of the Province of Quebec, and especially of Mon
treal, have made their appearance. Editorials are warning the Cana
dians against the Jewish peril. The main slogan of these attacks is
that the Jews do not wish to become Canadians, but insist on remain
ing a separate state within the state. One weekly, The Goglu,
devotes eight pages of pictures and editorials to the Jews of the
Province of Quebec, suggesting that the
only way to curb “this greedy race might
be to use a razor.” At no time has this
continent witnessed such wild anti-
Semitic attacks as are now poured forth
by a certain section of French Canada.
Canadian Jewry, far from being alarmed,
should, speaking as Canadians, condemn
in proud and uncompromising language
this revival of the methods of the dark
est days of Czaristic Russia.

Sbabuoth—Feast of Pentecost
Jewry the world over will open its
celebration of the Feast of Pentecost,
known in Jewish life as “Shabuoth,” on
Sunday evening, June 1, 1930. In the
Bible, which sets aside one day for the
observance of this festival, this holiday
ranks among the three festivals when the
Jews made pilgrimages to the Temple in
Jerusalem. Today it is celebrated as the
anniversary of the day when the children
