In Contrast
■ntlv three countries have singled out Jewish individuals for
honors. Sam Levinson is being urged by Professor John
in America for the next Nobel Peace Prize. France has
,] to erect a public statue of Sarah Bernhardt. The Universities
i and Frankfort are competing in the conferring of honorary
m . s on Max Reinhardt.
ultaneously with these announcements have come reports
ling conditions of the Jews in Central and Eastern Europe,
tlarlv. The survey of Dr. Bernard Kahn. European director of
nierican Joint Distribution Committee, is utterly depressing,
land ninety* per cent of the Jewish workers in the textile indus-
< unemployed. The political pressure on Russian Jewry grew
last year, with perhaps slight improvement the past few
v. Anti-Semitism in the Universities of Central, Eastern and
eastern Europe has increased. The Arab-Jewish problem is
intense than ever. Pierre Van Paassen expressed disappoint-
• concerning the Rumanian situation during his visit there. All
never before have the Jews of Eastern Europe been in such
urgent need as now.
IT.ese two pictures present strikingly contrasting impressions,
ims strange indeed that it does not strike any Christian friends
' that Levinson, Bernhardt and Reinhardt aTe of the race that

"Only Christians Need Apply"
advertisements appearing in the New York press particularly,
perhaps less often in other newspaper columns, is the growing
t the phrase “Only Christians Need Apply.” 1 his is an expres-
which calls to mind one of the potent Jewish problems today—
ILcrimination of Jewish employers against persons of their own
We feel it an insult, and surely without excuse, when this

mployment in general at present,
are cases everywhere citing Jewish
■ yers who are biased against Jews,

nlarly accounting and finance, find
dty in being placed. There are abso-
reliable reports that Jewish firms

rely it will be to the credit of Jew-
ganizations to feel it their duty, if
ary, to employ Jews. Jewish em-

employers everywhere desist from trying to draw their Jewishness
in the background will they begin to relieve the critical unemploy
ment problem today, and above all actively defend "Only Christians
need apply.”
Gross Ignorance
Now that the indictment of the Atlanta City Clerk is concluded,
it is the absolute duty of Jewish clergymen and leaders in Atlanta
and throughout the South to take in hand and make active response
to the sarcasm voiced by the attorney for the defense. In referring
to testimony of witnesses for the State he called them, among other
things, “crook Jews and foreigners who want to indict an honest
American.”
It is obvious that the attorney used poor judgment in displaying
his ignorance concerning the category of the word Jew, aside from
the fact that his insidious implication is without logical foundation.
Jewishness is entirely apart from nationality. Notwithstanding the
number of Jews in America who contribute in a large way to intel
lectual and philanthropic achievements, the average Jew is a loyal
citizen and an American. Moreover, Jewish immigrants who adopt
America as their homeland make devoted, appreciative citizens.
Assuming this attorney to be recognized in the criminal courts,
what judgment prompted him to utter such slanderous insinuations
against American citizens? Surely there was no apparent reason for
his accusations! With this in mind, it is time that our Jewish popu
lation, so well recognized and represented as an outstanding class,
sees to it immediately that such malicious charges should not only
be defended but entirely withdrawn. Will silence sanction this out
burst of ignorance?
A Vicious Report
The Reverend Clarence True Wilson, Secretary of the Methodist
Board, of Temperance, Prohibition and Public Morals, has drawn up
a secret report on the Presidential elections of 1928. It describes
the part the Methodist Church played in
the election of President Hoover and was
submitted to the. Senate Lobby Commit
tee the other day. Says Mr. Wilson in
his report: "We went up against the
worst combination that ever fought to
gether in the United States.” Then the
Methodist moralist enumerates the vari
ous elements that made up this “worst
combination”, and gives a place of honor,
along with the Foreigners and the Cath
olics, to the Jews. "An effort was made,”
Mr. Wilson elaborates,"to make the Jews
believe they had something in common
with the Catholics in this contest, and
with the aid of one or two distinguished
rabbis who tried to whip them as a race
(the italics are ours) in a line back of
the marching column for A1 Smith.” In
other words, the master mind of the
Board of Temperance, Prohibition and
Public Morals unequivocally charges the
Jews with marshaling a Jewish vote in
in the last Presidential (Cont. on 15)
