the Paramount Company, upon his im
porting Sergei Eisenstein, noted Rus

Directors’ Institute, claiming that such
importation was “an unspeakable crime”
inasmuch as he thought Eisenstein was
responsible for the propaganda pictures
glorifying the red cinema.
LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI leader ol

technique of broadcasting and is ex
perimenting with tonal apparatus for
different effects.
DR. A. S. W. ROSEN BACH, noted
bibliophile, has brought back from his re
cent visit to London one of the most
valuable historical accounts of the life of
Columbus, said to be 400 years old. The
manuscript, believed to have been written
about 1508, is said to have cost l)r. Rosen-
bach a sum in six figures.
ADELE BLOCK, born in Alsace Lor
raine, and oldest member of the Women’s
Society of the Israelite Francaise, died in
New York recently at the age of 95. She
came to this country 57 years ago with
her husband, who was an officer who
served with distinction in both the
Franco-Prussian and Franco-Italian wars.
LOUIS LIPSKY, former President of
the Zionist Organization of America, and
outstanding Zionist leader, became a
grandfather recently when a girl was born
to the wife of his oldest son, David. \ he
child was born a day after the closing
of the 33rd annual Zionist convention in
Cleveland.
LUCIUS N. LITTAUER, noted
Jewish philanthropist, has provided $18,-
750 for scholarships in medical research
at New York University, according to an
announcement by William E. Kingsley,
University Treasurer. Other gifts by
Jews to the Centennial Fund, to which
the Littauer contribution was made, in
cluded one of $5,450 by the Altman Foun
dation, and smaller gifts by Percy S.
Straus and Eli H. Bernheime.
DR. DANIEL PASMANIK, one of
the outstanding figures of Russian Zion
ism, died recently in Paris at the age of
61. The son of a melamed, he succeeded
in acquiring a Russian university educa
tion, and obtained his medical degree at
Zurich. He launched his Zionist career
in 1900 and was widely known for his
theoretical knowledge of Zionism and his
practical understanding of Palestine prob
lems.
ALFRED “AL” LASSMAN, at one
time all-American football tackle for New
York University, was drowned recently
when his canoe capsized on Long Lake,
at Camp Vakelo, where he was still re
cuperating from an injury he received in
1928 while playing football. In addition
to his football activities, Lassman was
the intercollegiate heavyweight boxing
champion and it was believed that he
would undertake a ring career upon
graduation, but his injuries prevented his
doing so.
