England Refuses to Admit Trotzky London.—The British Government has finally refused to admit Leon Trotzky to England, despite a petition signed by Bernard Shaw, H. G. Wells, and other prominent Britons. Zionist Student Groups Plan Palestine Passover Excursion Riga.—Plans for an excursion of Jewish students from all parts of the world to Palestine during the coming Passover were adopted at the conclusion of the first world conference of Zionist student corporations. The conference was attended by over 1 (K) delegates from eleven countries. Resolutions were adopted protesting against the suspension of immigration to Palestine, the persecution of Zionists in Soviet Russia, the activities of the British Shalom Society, and Dr. Judah L. Magnes in Palestine. It was also decided to es tablish a world union of Zionist student corporations. Auer to Be Buried at New York Dresden, Germany.—The body of Leo pold Auer, celebrated violinist and teacher of Mischa Elman and Jascha Heifetz, who recently died here, will be taken to New York for burial, in accordance with the wishes of the late musician and his widow. v Palestine Government Taking Precautions on Eve of Tisha B'Ab Jerusalem.—The customary notice pro hibiting assembling in the streets and the carrying of arms and weapons was posted by the government in connection with Tisha B’Ab, the Fast Day when the Jews make their annual pilgrimage to the Wail ing Wall, the remnant of the Temple, to recite the Lamentations of Jeremiah over the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple. Tisha B’Ab starts Satur day at sundown. In order to avoid the possibility of any clash with the Arabs, it is understood that the Jewish National Council has requested the Jewish youth organization and other Jewish groups to dispense with their usual custom of walking around the city's wall. No interference is expected with the ordinary procession to the Wailing Wall. Podlishevsky, Polish Jewish Leader, Dead W arsaw. — Abraham Podlishevsky, one of the outstanding leaders of Polish Jewry and President of the Polish Hias, died here at the age of 68 He was noted for his varied communal services and also as a Zionist worker. The cause of Hebrew culture found a steady supporter in him. At one time a wealthy merchant, he lost his money during the war, but he continued his active affiliation with Jewish leadership in Poland. Pabst had been chart. <| with fomenting a military revolution 94.3 Per Cent Arabs and 5.7 Per Cent Jews Employed by Department of Public Works in Palestine Tel Aviv.—While 94.3 per cent of the laborers employed by the government de partment of public works are Arabs, only 5.7 per cent are Jews. These figures are the result of a census taken by the General Federation of Jewish Lal*>r. Th< laborers employed by the department <> public works total 1,296, of which num ber only 84 are Jews. These do not in clude the 700 laborers on the Haifa harbor where there are 100 Jews employed, tin roads which are being built by Jewish organizations with the government aid, nor the foreman and superintendents. In the meantime the town council oi Petach Tikvah has appealed to the Jew ish planters to employ Jewish labor, point ing out that the number of Jews working on Jewish plantations has decreased, with some planters not hiring a single Jewish worker. The appeal also points out that the unemployment is seasonal and com paratively light. Three Jews Win Seats in Canadian Parliament; None Member of Conservatives Montreal.—Despite the smashing victory of the Conservatives in the recent Dominion-wide elections to the C anadian parliament three Jews not members of the winning, were elected. In Toronto Alderman Samuel Factor, running on tin Liberal ticket, defeated his Conservatiu opponent in the Centre West district, be ing the only Liberal elected in Toronto. Not only is Alderman Factor the tV' Jew from Toronto to be elected to the Canadian parliament but he is the first Liberal from Toronto to win in thirty - eight years.
