A Message for the Nezv Yen- By RABBI BENJAMIN KELSON ll'ihninyton. X. C. Ushering in the New ^ ear, we of Israel invariably do so with hope. Whatever the fortunes or misfortunes of the past, the future for us is allur ing with mystery and the promise of fulfillment. The mystery of the days to come does not affright us, however; for we treasure our immortal certain ties. What are the afflictions of our personal experience when compared to the travail of Israel through the gen erations? What are the burdens we bear, that we succumb to them, when we remember the burdens bravely borne by our fathers? Israel has never quailed; nor shall we, now that our opportunities are so manifold and our burdens lighter, quail beneath those lighter burdens. Looking back over the path that we have traversed through our lives unto this moment, we may wonder at the darkness that overshadows it, at the tortuous course of the journey; we may tremble and be afraid. But looking forward, as Israel has ever looked, lifted on the wings of our faith, upheld by the con victions that surge into being within us—looking confidently forward through the gate of the New Year, we see the mystic rays of light that must gleam upon us when our sincerest and noblest- desires inevitably are fulfilled. For when we pray, as we do in our holy season, for strength of the spirit, for the immutable possessions of faith, our prayers will surely be answered. Our country, especially our fair Southland, has been oppressed by a blight of drought. Through the ages in such crises men have always directed their prayers to Heaven for rain. This has been the custom in Judaism. But is not the prevalence of materialism, cynicism, and lawlessness a menace as great as any menace of drought? Into the spirits so parched for the living waters of faith, may there come in this New Year healing and courage. May all the sons and daughters of Israel drink anew of the wells of sal vation which eternally are theirs. May all those who stumble in the dark, who ALFRED S.
