Zadik Alcph,
Jewish boys between the ages of
sixteen and twenty-one are eligible to
this fast-growing organization whose
work is such as to strengthen its mem
bers culturally, morally and physically
and to stimulate their interests in Jew
ish affiliations.
As a natural result of restrictive im
migration legislation in the United
States, vast numbers of oppressed Jews
in lands abroad sought a refuge else
where. Because of the proximity of
Mexico to the United States, very con
siderable numbers emigrated to that
country, many of them doubtless with
the hope of sooner or later in one
way or another crossing the border.
Of course, they were poverty-stric
ken and destitute. They found none
to help them in Mexico, for the Jews
in that country were few in number
and totally unorganized. The new
comers increased and their desolation
grew apace. One Jewish organization
in America after another was appealed
to hut all to no effect.
Finally B'nai B'rith, though it real
ized that other bodies were better
epuipped for the service, resolved to
secure its unfortunate brethren and
also prevent a Hillul Ha Shem by re
moving the temptation to smuggle
themselves into this country, and for
eight years B'nai B’rith has maintained
a bureau in Mexico City with a social
center, a supervisor, hospital, medical
director, temporary shelter, and above
all, a sympathetic and attentive atti
tude toward the struggling thousands
in a new land.
Vast sums have been expended by
B'nai B’rith in this work; hut it was
judiciously disbursed and the work is
well nigh complete. Those of longest
residence are proclaiming themselves
able and willing to help the more re
cently arrived, and it is believed that
within a year or two at furthest this
latest transplation of our people will
he a self-supporting and highly res
pectable community.
Another growing chapter in the his
tory of B’nai B'rith will come to a
natural end within the next two years
when the last of 600 children, orphans
of the World War adopted by lodges
of the Order, will have reached the
age limit set for their support. Each
child was placed in direct contact with
the Lodge which became its foster
parent so that the relationship was in
the nature of a personal one.
The Order maintains an Emergency
Relief Fund, calls upon which, though
fortunately infrequent in recent years,
are promptly met. In the Palestine
disturbances a year ago, B'nai B’rith
contributed through the Palestine Re
lief Fund, and the subordinate lodges
and individual members aided materi
ally in providing that relief.
B’nai B’rith maintains definite con
tacts and activities in Palestine through
its local lodges there. This year mark
ed the dedication of the B'nai B’rith
