A New Year Message
o
By ROGER W. STRAUS
The New Year will mark
almost the eighth year since
the formation of the Na
tional Federation of Temple
Brotherhoods. It is fitting
to consider, at this time,
what has been accomplished
during that period, and what
can he expected in the fu
ture.
The first underlying objec
tive of the R rot her hood
movement is to increase the
number of American Jewish
laymen who are interested in the
Synagogue, as well as to intensify
that interest. Especially important
is the effort made by the Brother
hoods to reach those who have previ
ously manifested little or no interest
in their religion. We believe the record
made by the National Federation of Tem
ple Brotherhoods proves that we have
been at least partially successful in
reaching this objective, but we have
only gone a very small part of the
way, and there is still a
long road to travel before
we can feel certain that we
will reach a point even half
way towards our ultimate
goal.
There is undoubtedly a
rising tide of religious inter
est throughout the world,
and it is our privilege and
duty to sec to it that men
of Jewish background are
leaders in this movement.
We take this opportunity
of sending good wishes to our con
servative and orthodox brothers who
have set tip similar organizations to
that of the National Federation of
Temple Brotherhoods.
And we likewise wish to express
the hope that all American Jews will
affiliate themselves with the Syna
gogue—it being a matter of personal
preference, whether with one form of
Judaism or another.
ROGER W. STRAUS.
of New York, N. Y\,
President of the National
Federation of Temple
Brotherhoods, has issued
the following New Year
greetings:

and William Morris, the theatrical
agent, the Jew (also needless to say).
They were both in London and had
taken a taxi. When they got out at
their destination Morris purposely hung
hack to see what Lauder would do.
He waited a half minute, came out of
the cal), and started tumbling in his
pockets for the two shillings thrup-
pence. Lauder, too, fumbled in his
pockets, dug his hand into one pocket
after another. They kept up this per
formance for about five minutes Fi
nally, out of sheer exhaustion, Lauder
took out the money and handed it to
the cab driver. At which Morris asked:
“Why did you do that, Harry? You
must think an awful lot of me.
“Why did I do that? Why, you out-
fumbled me, that’s all.

It seems that the costly competition
and the expensive patent suits between
the Gillette Razor Company and the
Auto-Strop people, makers of the Pro-
bak razor, will shortly result in a mer
ger. But while these two giants have
been scrapping, an infant in the indus
try has been growing up. so that by
the time the merger goes into effect it
will have a menace in the form of the
Segal Razors, made by the Segal broth
ers, who operate Segal Lock and Hard
ware. The Segal boys have been doing
extremely well. It was only a few
months ago that I mentioned in this
column that I had seen the new blades
they were putting out. And today they
constitute a threat to such vast insti
tutions sa Gillete and Auto-Strop. Well,
you can’t keep these Jewish boys down.
If you won’t let them into medical
schools they’ll go out and make razors.
The goyim should think of that first.

so-called sacramental wine. This wine
may just as well be called sacrilegious,
as it found its way to Ixiotleggers. One
thing is certain; that Campbell would not
have made such a statement in this case
without having some justification for it.
It is needless to say that there are cases
on record of such attempts for the diver
sion of sacramental wine. Jewish public
opinion must be aroused more and more
to the fact that we should not be involved
in this tragic era of law defiance. Pro
hibition in some quarters may be con
sidered a jest, but when facts like these
are printed in cold type we must awaken
congregations and Jewish leaders so that
synagogues may not be degraded.

English Jewish Publication Praised
Cincinnati, Ohio. — Appreciation of
the services of the Knglish-Jewish
press of this country to American
Jewry was expressed in a statement
issued by l)avid A. Brown, chairman
of the Board of Finance of the Union
of American Hebrew Congregations.
The statement announced the discon-
tinuence of the Union’s monthly maga
zine. Union Tidings, which has been
published for more than ten years.
“In all the efforts that I have been
associated with over a long period of
years,” Mr. Brown said, “the ejwish
press played an important part, and
without the co-operation and help of
the Jewish press of this country it
would have been impossible to have
carried on to a successful issue those
many ventures which have spelled
themselves out in the helping of thou
sands of our people in all parts of the
world.”
