THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE A Magazine Perpetuating Jewish Ideals \ i nine 5 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1930 Number IS ngthening Our Faith cm* are the days of reviewing our position, the days of return- tlu* fountain of the Jewish spirit, the days of girding ourselves renewed strength. They serve to give many Jews an oppor which otherwise they might not have, to discuss ideas and to renew their bonds with their fellow-Jews in an atmosphere redness and spiritual revelation. di llashonah and Yom Kippur incorporate a glorious, human i conception. A whole people scattered through all the cor- t the world gathers on this day and gives vent before the Jity to its bitter woes and hopes. There is something of human appeal in the fact that a whole people gets together, t d by one thought, a single emotion, thus exemplifying the ! bond which holds together all the elements of the Jewish . regardless of their various religious conceptions. Kven those who do not practice the Jewish religion throughout the year maintain that they are agnostics or atheists, cannot refrain i Kippur from attending the synagogue, if only for a brief ic. tn hear the old Kol Nidre melody. he Holidays have not only a purely religious significance, but a national, cultural and social meaning for the Jewish people. ^ as the perennial occasion for Jews to instinctively return ir old source of Jewish vigor and cohesion,—the Synagogue— days constitute the chief link in the golden chain of Jewish • r\ and experience since the ancient times when the Hebrews i their independent, national life in Palestine. Ibis link must tlengthened by us today, in order to preserve the continuity of eolden chain. Fnhanccs American Jewish Prestige President Hoover's selection of Kugene Mever, Jr., New York banker, for the post of (»overtior of the Federal Hoard is of signif icance. It brings to one of the most responsible administrative posts a progressive financier of unusual ability whose career has enhanced the prestige of his coreligionists in this country. Com paratively young for such a position (Mr. Meyer is only fifty-five), the new tiovernor of the Federal Reserve Hoard is considered a forceful personality of aggressive executive ability, well-informed not only of the workings of the money markets but also of the credit needs of the agricultural districts. The selection of Kugene Meyer as the highest executive of the Federal Hoard recalls that Paul Warburg, another Jewish financier, is responsible for the hederal Reserve system. It was Warburg who worked out the intricate machinery ot the Federal Reserve, which today is looked upon a^> an essential part of governmental protection of the country’s wealth. Sad Anniversary hf first anniversary of the riots in which a hundred and thirty- lews were killed at Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed and Motzah passed recently. Throughout the world Jews, regardless ot ther they belong to the Zionist Organization, have given ex- ~i"ii to their deep mourning for the ' who fell in the bloody August '- >w In Palestine the British Gov- 1 nt took every precaution to pre any disorders or clashes between and Jews. The organ of the Grand the Arab paper U1 Jatnia ul Ara- ls been confiscated by the Pales- uthorities because of its incessant for an Arab general strike of t Nothing was left undone to dn peace—and nothing of a de nature occured. This is another that the right kind of administra- an prevent serious trouble bc- the Arabs and Jews in Palestine, impending decisions which the Government will have to make egard to its political policy in ‘"rael this should not be forgotten. A Splendid Statement, But . . . Hetty Ross, the novelist and journalist, secured a scoop when she interviewed the new C anadian Premier, R. H. Bennett, for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency on his private train. The Premier, so her story runs, was very tired, but insisted on paying tribute to Canada’s Jewish citizens. Said the Premier, among other things: “We in Canada do not know what anti-Jewish feeling means. This is a country where people of all races, ‘Jew or Gentile. Greek and Barbarian, bound and free,’ are working together to develop our common country. We have not time to waste our energy in inter necine strife.” A splendid statement by the Hon. Mr. Bennett. But what about the Le Goglu group of the Province of Quebec, that anti-Semitic body which during the last elections fought on the side of Mr. Bennett and against the Jews? What about them? ()f course they are neither Greeks nor Barbarians, it is true. They are French-Canadians— citizens of the Dominion of Canada. CONTENTS Review of the Year By Jos. Louis Gruenberg, Krnest Bloch, and Aaron Copland captured three of these awards. It is highly significant that three out of four prizes went to Jewish composers. This leads one to the conclusion that the best contemporary serious as well as light American music is being written by Jewish composers these days. Only recently Leo Ornstein won the Brooks- Bright Contest «for a new national an them to replace the “Star Spangled Ban ner”. George Gershwin dominates the jazz symphonic field and was the only American picked among the “fifty best composers” of all time. Irving Berlin with his ballads is still to be found heading the list of the best-sell ing songs. There is no boastfulness in this enumeration of Jewish musical top notchers.
