A New Year's Greeting
From RABBI L. FREUND
formerly of Slimier, S. C.
Availing myself of this opportunity
as Rabbi of Congregation Sinai of
Sumter, South Carolina, for the past
two years and now of IVnai Israel of
Natchez, Miss., I desire to extend to the
members and friends of both congrega
tions and to all readers of the South
ern Israelite my best wishes for the
approaching New Year. Sincerely do
I hope that the year 5691 will be
fraught with unalloyed health and
contentment for all of us, as well as the
House of Israel, and the world til
large, throughout which blessed peace
may reign supreme.
May the benison of God rest upon
us, so that we may continue to carry
on our duties as children of faith, ulti
mately promoting the true brotherhood
of man, always steadfast in our de
votion to our immortal watchword,
‘ Hear, () Israel, the Lord our God,
the Lord is One.”
This is the watchword of n people
whose slogan might well be at this
time “Continue the March,” a slogan
adopted as the pride of our past
glories and as a matter of necessity for
th(> future. Even in this present eco
nomic depression there can he no let
down in enthusiasm and energy because
the call for the seemingly innumer
able causes and needs challenge us to
greater activities. The force that
keeps Judaism in all its phases moving
is not centered in any one individual,
grouj) or place. It extends over an
entiie nation enhancing a world’s joys
and sorrows within our scope.
What if we should have stopped and
turned a deaf ear at the call for aid
when our brethren were outraged and
massacred in Palestine but a year ago?
What if we would deny assistance to
the Allied Jewish Campaign? What if
Sees European Yiddish
Theatre Standards Lower
Than Those Here
New York.—Yiddish theatrical stand
ards in Europe today are very low, the
Yiddish theatres on the other side being
on a much lower level than the theatres
over here, declared Abraham Ellstein,
New York Jewish composer and director
of Yiddish theatrical orchestras, upon his
return from Europe. Mr. Ellstein had
gone to Europe together with Ludwig
Satz and his troupe for a ten-week en
gagement, having played in the two
largest Jewish centers of Europe, War
saw, and London.
Yiddish troupes in Europe, said Mr.
Ellstein, are forced to play in old,
dilapidated, and insanitary buildings.
Scenery and costumes are antiquated,
while lighting effects are unheard of.
Orchestras are in a terrible condition,
while acting still follows the old-time
melodramatic style, he stated. Most of
the plays presented in European Yiddish
theatres are adapted from American
Yiddish plays, declared Mr. Ellstein, and
the Yiddish theatrical public over there
demands either cheap melodramatic clap
trap or vaudeville and jazz pieces.
our spokesmen would have remained
silent when our synagogues and reli
gious schools were and still are being
destroyed and despoiled by the God
less people in Russia? What if the
charitable and the merciful who aid
the poor, care for the sick, teach the
ignorant, and extend a helping hand
to those who have lost their way from
our fold would neglect their duty, then
our widespread determination to con
tinue an onward and upward march
would cease to be the beautiful ideal
of a historic past.
Today we are facing a new era.
Those who toiled a life-time in behalf
of the Jewish cause are beginning to
see the end of the first chapter in
Israel’s history in America. The work
of organizing our religious, social, and
economic life has been thoroughly es
tablished. Tn many communities, to a
great extent, this work has been so
well defined and so highly developed
that our co-religionists are able to place
their religious convictions on par with
the marked scientific advancements.
Abreast with science we can see the
future hope leading us to greater ac
tivities, uniting all branches of our peo
ple into a unified harmonious religious
group under the banner of Israel’s
faith, whose prophetic mission will be
fulfilled and met in the old and ever
enthusiastic wish, “All Israel are
friends." Today we are beginning to
see our people banded together toward
the alleviation of all social ills irre
spective of their theological differences.
May the New Year, therefore, bring
us this happy realization for which we
should consecrate our lives. May we
find the loving purpose of serving the
God of Israel and humanity be in
scribed upon our hearts to “Continue
the March”.
