Concerning Statistics

ere are 15.050.000 Jews in the entire world. Of these 4.228.000
ated under the United States. In other words, over a fourth
xvi.rid Jewry lives in the land of Uncle Sam. This aspect of world
flairs frequently is overlooked. It is highly significant that
United States of America has a larger Jewish population than
gle European country—since the Versailles Treaty. Thus
American Jewry speaks, the largest and most influential
[ewidt communal voice is heard. Under such circumstances the
ntcrest of American Jewry in the affairs of Polish, Russian. Ger*
i. and Rumanian Jewry does not represent unwarranted inter-
cnee. hut a definite responsibility. This not only because of the
ldderahle portion of world Jewry residing in our land, but because
iMria. Czechoslovakia. Hungary. Latvia, Lithuania, Rumania, and
! those other countries, have Jewries so situated, from a material
nit of view, that the possibility of their participation in affairs
tside their own frontiers is negligible. The authoritative figures
: the American Jewish Committee confirm the responsibilities of
nncriean Jewry toward the other eleven millions of Jews scattered

with the familiar dictum: “Is a Jew not a fellow New Yorker up
against just the same difficulties that you are? Hath not a Jew
eyes J Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections,
passions? George Gordon Hattie’s views disappointed us. They did
not clarify the problem. The substituted "misunderstanding” for
‘discrimination”. This is too easy a way out. New York Jewry—
and, for that matter. American Jewry—is the victim of direct dis
crimination by its Gentile co-citizens in the fields of education, habi
tation, social life and business. (>f this there is no doubt. Non-Jews
of the calibre of George Gordon Hattie should not hesitate to call a;
spade a spade when discussing publicly the Jews of the United States.
Under Synagogal Benches
’T’orty members of the anti-Semitic Stahlhelm organization found
lum in a synagogue at Frankfort on Yom Kippur, when they
tied from a large crowd of Communists who had worsted them in
>treet brawl. The Jews worshiping in the synagogue permitted the
-Semites to wait in a side room until the police dispersed the
nummists.” Thus reads a News Service report. One feels tempted
udd nothing. The dispatch is self-explanatory. Tt tells a long
’"iv of Jewish tolerance and readiness to forget and forgive,
nfortunately the dispatch does not

No Campaign Talk
He ywood Hroun. the nationally known columnist, a Congres
sional candidate on the Socialist ticket in the silk-stocking district
of New York, is one of the very few non-Jews who in writing and
public speaking has tackled the Jewish question in a frank, straight
forward manner. He has unequivocally charged some of the most
important New York business men and real estate owners with prac
ticing—even when not preaching—a strict policy of "no Jews
allowed”. Iirounds liberal attitude and tolerant understanding of the
Jewish issue in New York were not born with his candidacy. Years
ago, when he had no more idea of participating in a political cam
paign than of refusing a highball, he spoke the same language.
There is no such thing as a Jewish vote. We do, however, unflinch
ingly declare that liberal and progressive voters in Heywood Broun’s
district will remember that he does not believe in racial or religious
prejudice and discrimination.

A Financial Genius
The death of Daniel Guggenheim removes one of the most pic
turesque figures of the contemporary American scene. Among Jewish
capitalists he was one of the few real
builders of the pioneer type. At one time
he built a city 1(),(XX) feet up in the
Chilean mountains to work hitherto in
accessible copper mines. He got tin from
Bolivia, rubber from the Congo, gold
from Alaska and other minerals from
Mexico and Asia. Railroads, trust com
panies, smelting plants, banks were his
sidelines, controlled mostly with the
money he got from his mines. In private
life this gigantic builder, who was one
of the world’s leading figures as a de
veloper of natural resources, was a mild,
inconspicuous little man. He built a hos
pital in New York in memory of his par
ents, spent three million dollars for the
advancement of aviation, and provided
free concerts for the poor of America’s
metropolis. He also aided in the build
ing of the new Temple Emanu-Kl, where
he was a regular worshiper. One of
America’s truly great financial geniuses
has passed on.
