AUSTRIAN MINISTER OF JUS

MAYOR JAMES J. WALKER of

companied the gift, Mayor Walker from
time to time has praised the work of the
Jewish charities, singling out in particular
the service of its hospitals for the extent
of their free service.
MAX DEUTSCH, former head of the
Soviet secret police in Odessa, was re
cently appointed chairman of the All-
Russian Commission of the Coal Trust in
Moscow. Deutsch has been an active
revolutionist since he was fourteen when
he joined the Jewish Socialist party, the
Bund. Lately he has been active in eco
nomic affairs.
RABBI BERTRAM STEIN, of Cin
cinnati, has been elected spiritual leader
of Congregational Beth-El of Steuben
ville, Ohio. He is a Hebrew Union Col
lege graduate, of the class of 1930.

MISS VIRGINIA FRANK, for six
years assistant superintendent of the

Charities of Chicago, has been named
superintendent to succeed Mr. Harry
Lurie. Miss Frank has been connected
with the Jewish Social Service Bureau
for 15 years. She received all her school
ing in Chicago and started her career as
a visitor in the office she now heads.
