In The Limelight
EMIL LUDWIG, noted German-Jew-
ish biographer, has made a five-act drama
out of a sketch of Woodrow which he
had previously written. The play, “Ver
sailles”, reveals the hatreds and animosi
ties which governed the peace settlements
after the war, and is believed to be a
scorching indictment of France and Eng
land and an idealization of Wilson.
DR. KARL LANDSTEINER, the
American Jew who won the 1930 Nobel
Prize in Medicine, was characterized as
the ideal man by Sinclair Lewis, winner
of the Nobel Prize in Literature, at a
recent luncheon tendered to the two.
Speaking of Dr. Landsteiner, Mr. Lewis
declared: “One of the favorite aims of
my fiction is to attempt to depict a man
as genial, modest and patient as Dr.
Landsteiner. However, I cannot hope
ever to succeed.”
FELIX M. WARBURG, noted Jewish
banker, has made a contribution of $10,-
000.00 to the Jewish Education Associa
tion of New York, according to a recent
announcement. Among others who gave
large amounts were Mortimer L. Schiff
who gave $5,000.00; and Lt.-Gov. Herbert
Lehman, who gave $2,000.00
DR. A. S. W. ROSEN BACH, presi
dent of the American Jewish Historical
Society, editor, bibliographer, and col
lector, has given $20,000 to the University
of Pennsylvania, for the establishment of
an honorary fellowship in bibliography,
The fellowship is said to be the first in
its field at any university in the United
States. Dr. Rosenbach was graduated
from the University of Pennsylvania with
the degree of bachelor of science in 1898
and three years later received the degree
of doctor of philosophy.
HARRY BACH A RAC 11. Mayor of
Atlantic City, was recently threatened
by the underworld there because of his
vigorous activities to drive undesirables
out of the city. In commenting on the
underworld threat Bacharach said: ‘‘1
am not the type that is easily scared
I shall not swerve from my determined
policy.”
MRS. SADIE SHULMAN, formerly
assistant Boston corporation council and
the first woman to hold that post, has
been named by Governor Frank G. Allen
as a special justice in the Dorchester
District Court. Mrs. Shulman, who is
39 years old, was admitted to the Massa
chusetts bar in 1912 and has since won
eminence as a trial lawyer, particularly
in the handling of criminal and divorce
cases.
LOUIS L. KAHN, a prominent law
yer of New York City, was appointed
by Governor Roosevelt as a judge of the
City Court of New York Ctiy to fill the
place left vacant by the elevation of
Bernard L. Shientag to the Supreme
Court. Mr. Kahn was elected two weeks
ago to complete the five years remaining
of Justice Shientag’s term and his ap
pointment by the Governor is only for
th? balance of this year.
ALBERT M. BENDER, widely-
known San Francisco art patron and book
lover, was recently notified that he had
been decorated by the Italian government
with the Order of the Chevalier of the
Crown of Italy. The award was made
in appreciation of his support of the
Italian book exhibit held in San Fran
cisco last year.
REV. NATHAN KRASS, of Temple
Emanu-El in New York City, in a re
cent sermon paid tribute to Louis Mar
shall on the occasion of the seventy-
fourth birthday of the Jewish leader.
Mr. Marshall was at one time president
of Temple Emanu-El.
DR. BERNHARD KAHN, director
of the Joint Distribution Committee’s
work in Europe, and Dr. Joseph Rosen,
director in charge of the Committee’s
work in Russias, sailed recently from
America for the purpose of carrying on
tli'? work of the Joint Distribution Com
mittee in the world’s financial centers.
The program for industrializing the Jews
of Russia by teaching them trades and
equipping them with machines is being
carried forward under Dr. Rosen’s sug
gestion by the Joint Distribution Commit
tee in order to make it possible for the
Jews to avail themselves of the oppor
tunity offered by the government.
Mrs. WILLIAM DICK SPORBORG,
an honorary vice president of the Na
tional Council of Jewish Women, has
recently been elected president of the
New York State Federation of Women’s
Clubs. Mrs. Sporborg is widely active
in the Council of Jewish Women, having
served not only her local council in an
official capacity, but also as a past presi
dent of the New York City Federation
of Women’s Clubs.
DANIEL FROM MAN, president and
one of the founders of the Actors’ Fund
of America, was honored at a tribute din
ner in New York City recently. The
dinner, was sponsored by the Actors'
Fund Matinee Club and associations of
actors, authors and managers. Mr.
Frohman’s association with the drama in
New York began when he became mana
ger of the Madison Spuare Theatre.
Later on he became manager of the
Lyric Stock Company, which produced
Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pau
per.”
