New York, N. Y.—The elimination of
prejudicial material in religious and
secular textbooks is one of the primary
requirements for a decrease in creedal
intolerance, according to a consensus of
opinion at a seminar on better relations
between Jews, Catholics, and Protestants
that was held here at the Hotel McAlpin
under the auspices of the National Con
ference of Jews and Christians. Newton
D. Baker, Secretary of War in the Wil
son Cabinet, was presented with the
American Hebrew Medal for better un
derstanding at one of the sessions .
Dr. Harry A. Overstreet, noted phi
losopher and professor at the College
of the City of New York, declared that
each faith must revise its conception of
religion. “If it is true that to a Jew
the Protestant is not religious, or that to
a Protestant the Catholic is not religious,
we shall have to religionize ourselves all
over again. We cannot each maintain a
monopolitstic hold on our religions and
at the same time have a real sympathy
with the religion of others.”
1 lie four essentials for eliminating
prejudice were listed as follows: the dis
covery of common interests; and appre
ciation of the truth in another’s position;
a consciousness of one’s own weakness;
and self discipline to stop generalizations
based on merely personal experience.
