Y.-Albert Einstein, universally acknowledged the foremost mathematician and physicist of our age, arrived here on the S. S. Belgenland and stayed for four days while the, boat was unloading, on its way to Calofirnia. He met and answered the questions of re porters and allowed himself to he snapped by photographers. He even spoke into the microphones of the sound-news men. He left the boat on several occasions, mostly to see the city, one of the Metro politan Opera performances and to have lunch with Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times. New Haven, Conn.—Yale University, in a joint announcement with Harvard University, states that an endowment has been provided by the will of the late Lady Julia Lewisohn Henry which will furnish funds to permit four British stu dents each year to attend Harvard and Yale, and also to permit four American students each year to attend Oxford or Cambridge. The scholarships, each worth $2,400, are intended to cement British- American friendship. The late Lady Julia was the widow of Sir Charles Henry and the daughter of Leonard Lewisohn of New York. New York, N. Y.—Half a million Jews in thirteen lands of Eastern Europe were benefited by the relief operations of the Joint Distribution Committee, according to a report presentd by Dr. Bernard Kahn, European director of the J. I). C., who is in this country for a brief visit. His report refers to the establishment of loan banks and co-operatives, begin ning with 1924, with funds provided by the J. I). C. These loans, granted mostly in the form of fifty dollar credits, have been important means of saving the Jew in Eastern Europe economically, I)r. Kahon said. During the year 1930 loans to the extent of sixty million dollars will have been granted, lie reported. New York, N. Y.—Albert Einstein’s prsence in New York provided inspira tion for many of New York’s ministers, Jewish and non-Jewish, to devote entire sermons to the man and his achievements. Dr. John Hayes Holmes declared that Einstein is a “profound religionist,” even though “he has no use for the traditional theologies of the church.” Rabbi Israel Goldstein said that “Einstein’s visit should arouse in us not merely curiosity but a willingness to measure ourselves by his standards as a man, and thus to be helped to higher spiritual attainment.” Dr. Rob ert Norwood of St. Bartholomew’s Church on Park Avenue characterized Einstein as a bringer of light in a dark ened age. New York City—The publication of a “Layman’s Manual of Social Service,” has been announced by the Department of Social Service of the National Council of Jewish Women. Mrs. J. L. Einstein of Cleveland, Ohio, Chairman of this department, states that this manual will meet the problems of small groups that do not possess the advantage of profes sional service in directing their social welfare activities. “During the War, large numbers of volunteers were prepared for service in behalf of the families of the men who had enrolled in the armies of the United States,” stated Mrs. Einstein. “The need for the training of volunteers is as imperative today. The large communities have facilities for providing training courses, hut the small community requires our special assistance. It is these groups that the Manual is calculated to aid.” In addition to a comprehensive presen tation of the present day problems of social work, instruction is included on supplementary reading. The plan of meeting the needs of the small groups and communities will be supplemented with suggestions for inviting men and women from neighboring iommunities who are equipped to discuss various social questions. I nplacing the publication at the dis posal of Council Sections, Mrs. Einstein declares that the need and op|x>rtunity for the volunteer service of members of the National Council of Jewish Women are greater than ever before, especially because of the current conditions, involv ing inadquate budgets in every field of social work. New York, N. Y.—That philanthropy is not always appreciated by the reci pient was evidenced here when Negro physicians and surgeons in Harlem, com posing the Manhattan Medical Society, rejected an offer by Julius Rosenwald to supply funds for a Negro hospital, and at the same time attacked Rosen- wald’s other gifts to Negroes, which total many millions of dollars. In a message commenting upon Rosen wald’s offer Ferdinand O. Morton, Negro civic service commissioner here, declared: “Mr. Rosenwald’s projects in behalf of the Negro, while doubtless well-intended, have perhaps done us more harm than good. If Mr. Rosenwald’s interests in colored Americans is sincere it would be a fine thing for him to prove it by ex tending colored men and women in his vast business organization equality of op portunity in employment and promotion, a thing which he does not do now.” Atlanta Feed & Grocery Co.
