Some 300 widely known Jewish citizens
of the State held the meeting here Sun
day, November 23rd, to discuss “The
Small Communities and Its Religious
Needs.”
Wendell M. Levi of Sumter, chairman
of the conference, was elected chairman
of the South Carolina Association of
Synagogues and School Extension. Isa-
dore Blank, Charleston, was elected vice-
chairman; Mrs. Julian Hennig, Columbia,
corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Sol
Kohn, Columbia, recording secretary.
The association will meet every two
years.
After invocation by Dr. Jacob S. Raisin
of Charleston, Louis B. Simmons, pres
ident of the Tree of Life Congregation,
Columbia, welcomed the delegates and I.
W. Jacobi, president of Temple of Israel,
Greenville, responded.
Chairman Levi emphasized the impor
tance of keeping isolated Jews in contact
with Judaism and pointed to the Jewish
heritage as one of which to be proud.
Harold Hirsch of Atlanta, chairman of
the Southeastern Executive Committee,
told of the aims and spirit of the regional
conference held recently at Atlanta.
Rabbi Gustave F. Falk, Cincinnati,
Southeastern Regional Director for the
Union of American Hebrew Congrega
tions, stated that organized committees
affiliated with the Union are at Beaufort,
Bishopville, Charleston, Camden, Colum
bia, Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Green
ville, Spartanburg and Sumter.
Speakers included Ernest Rosenberg,
Greenwood; L. A. Wittowsky, Camden;
Mrs. Henry Hirschmann, Charleston;
Col. I. C. Strauss, Sumter; Isadore
Blank, Charleston; Mrs. Julian Hennig,
and Coleman Karesh, Columbia; Bene
dict Hyman, Darlington, and Miss Irene
Kasler of Gaffney, a student of Win-
throp.
Dr. Isadore Schayer of the University
of South Carolina presided over a dis
cussion on “The University and the Jew
ish Student.”

PROCEEDINGS of The South Carolina
STATE Conference of the Southeastern
CONFERENCE of the Union of Amer
ican Hebrew Congregations.
Pursuant to the call of Mr. Wendell
M. Levi, of Sumter, member of the
Executive Board of the Southeastern
Conference and chairman for the State
of South Carolina, representatives of the
congregations, Sisterhoods and Brother
hoods in South Carolina affiliated with
the Union and its kindred organizations
convened in Columbia, S. C., on Novem
ber 23, 1930.
After the invocation was given by
Dr. Jacob S. Raisin, of Charleston, the
assemblage sang America, Mrs. I. Jacobi,
of Greenville, playing the piano accom
paniment.
Mr. Wendell M. Levi read the call for
the Conference sent to the Constituent
Congregations, Sisterhoods and Brother
hoods in South Carolina, which explained
the purpose of the meeting.
The following committees were ap
pointed :

of Columbia, Chairman; Mr. L. A. Witt

After these details of business were
completed, Mr. Louis B. Simmons, of
Columbia, president Congregation Tree
of Life, bids a hearty welcome to the
assemblage; responded to in warm terms
by Mr. I. W. Jacobi, of Greenville,
president of Temple of Israel Congre
gation.
Mr. Wendell M. Levi, in giving his
report of the “Southeastern Regional
Conference in Atlanta, March 30th and
31st,” mentioned the need of creating
