New York.—After a trial which en
dured more than a month in the federal
courts, before Judge John C. Knox, the
jury during the "Matzo case" returned
a verdict of disagreement. The jury'
could reach no decision as to whether
or not the Manishewitz and the Horo
witz- Margareten Matzo companies had
used trust methods in coining to he the
most important elements in the matzo
industry.
(. harges of violating the Sherman anti
trust law were brought against the two
companies by Rabbi Moses Weinberger,
Inc., matzo manufacturers, who demand
ed $150,(XX) damages. Gustavas A. Rog
ers, attorney for the plaintiff, attempted
to prove that the defendants had pre
vented dealers from handling his client’s
matzos. Hyman J. Reit, attorney for the
Manishewitz company, maintained that
legitimate business methods had been used
in building up the million-dollar matzo
organization.
During the trial, judge and jury sam
pled the various brands of matzos. The
jury was out over night, and returned
with a verdict of non-agreement.

Chicago. — Ludwig Lewisohn’s new
book. "The Last Days of Shylock", is
the January selection of the Jewish Hook
Club. This was announced by I)r. Ralph
H. Goldman, president of the club, at its
headquarters here. In this book, Mr.
Lewisohn has taken up the story of the
Merchant of Venice where Shakespeare
left off, presenting Shylock as no blood
less inquisitor, but a man embittered
by injustice, rebellious against ancient
wrongs.
Other books selected by the Jewish
Book Club for January substitution are:
“The Case for the Jews," by Louis J.
Gribetz; "A History of Jewish Litera
ture,” by Dr. Meyer Waxrnan; "Bio
graphical Sketches and Selected Poems,"
by the Rev. Samuel Marcus Gollancz, and
"Mendel Marantz,” by David Freedman.

Warsaw.—In an authorized statement
the Polish government denies that it ever
entered into negotiations for the purchase
of Portuguese Angola. The reports of
such negotiations are characterized as
“absolutely baseless”. Such reports, cir
culated recently, suggested that the Jew
ish emigration to the colony would be
encouraged. The Polish government as
serted that negotiations for Angola were
never conducted or even proposed.

Newark.—Jewish holidays like Chanu
kah and Passover should be celebrated in
the public schools, just as the latter cele
brate Christmas, especially when a large
number of the pupils in a particular pub
lic school arc Jewish. This was the con
tention of Rabbi Leon S. Lang, made
during a lecture which he delivered at
Temple Oheb Shalom.
"In a country that necessarily is pre
dominantly Christian," said Rabbi Lang,
"we have reason to believe that if the
public schools must reflect the Christian
influence, at least there should he some
effort made to cultivate also an appre
ciation of the finer values and beautiful
practices of other religions, especially of
those which a large proportion of the
pupils profess."

Boston.—Rabbi Samuel M. Blumen-
field. of Chicago, national Avukar presi
dent, in his report to the fifth Avukah
convention being held here, stated that
on? important achievement of Avukah
was that of making the renaissance of
the Hebrew language a vital factor on
American campuses. The Hebrew lan
guage, lie pointed out, has already been
recognized as a regular subject in high
schools and colleges in a number of cities
throughout the country, including New
York, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Seattle,
Portland, Ore., and others, due to the
efforts of Avukah.
Dr. Mitchell Salem Fisher, of New
York, chairman of the Administrative
Committee, reported that ten new chap
ters of Avukah have been formed this
year, as far south as Texas and as far
north as Winnipeg, Canada. George M.
Hyman, of New York, national execu
tive secretary, reporting on Prof. Albert
Einstein’s recent radio address under the
auspices of Avukah, stated that as a
result of this address many letters have
been received from Christian clergymen
and others who wish to be more in
formed on the Zionist movement and the
activities of Avukah.
