LESTER W. ROTH, former newspa
perman, who received his law degree in
1916, was appointed to a place on the
California Superior Court by Governor
Rolph, to succeed Judge Harry A. Holl-
zer, who was recently named a Federal
Judge by President Hoover.

JONAH J. GOLDSTEIN, prominent
Jewish communal leader and philanthro
pist, has been named by Mayor James J.
Walker as a city magistrate. It is under
stood that Tammany Hall urged Gold
stein’s appointment in order to counteract
the effect of the current judicial scandal.
Goldstein has been mentioned previously
for a New York Supreme Court post.

MRS. ELM A EHRLICH LEVIN-
GER, author and playwright, has been
adjudged the winner of the Jewish novel
contest sponsored by the Jewish Tribune
Publications of New York and the Strat
ford Company of Boston. The novel
which won the $2,00(1 prize offered is en
titled “Grapes of Canaan” and deals with
the rise of an American Jewish family.
Mrs. Levinger is the wife of Rabhi Lee
J. Levinger, Lecturer in Philosophy at
Ohio State University, Columbus.

JOSEPH PULITZER
of the New York World, generally acknowl
edged as the outstanding liberal daily in the
country. The World, the Evening World and
Sunday World have been sold by the three
sons of Joseph Pulitzer to the Scripps-Howard
newspaper chain, nullifying the will of Pulitzer,
who demanded the preservation of his paoers at
all cost. The late Joseph Pulitzer was regarded
as one of America’s master newspaper builders.

composer of the world-famous song, “Eili, Eili’\
died the other day a poor man. A music
publisher made more than $500,000 on this
popular composition, which Sandler wrote over
30 years ago, but did not copyright until much
