Are Jezvs Too Sensitive?

elsewhere that Mr. Ochs was so diaboli
cally clever, he even fostered clubs of
ex-Tinies men and gave large banquets
as a method of gaining good-will for
the ‘Times.’
“That reporter, who is a non-Jew,
simply got his facts mixed. His atti
tude of suspicion was unwarranted.
Lots of Jews get their facts mixed too.
Like our author, they may mistake hali
tosis for anti-Semitism.
“Jews seem naturally to gravitate to
the arts. 1 here are several reasons for
that. Art is cosmopolitan, and the Jews
are essentially cosmopolites.
“All art thrives on poverty, or hare
living. The greatest violinists today are
Russian Jews, who suffered privations
in their youth. Parents in ghettos, real
izing that their children were auto
matically cut off from every profession,
started almost at birth to foster what
talent there was in their children. It
would he their avenue of escape. When
Joshoa Heifetz was so young his arms
weren’t quite strong enough to hold it
—his father was placing a violin in
them. Reuben Heifetz hoped that his
son would inherit his love and under
standing of music, for he knew it was
also a release. Here, in America, there
is no such problem. It is heartening to
know that in spite of assured comforts
Reuben Heifetz is still carrying on the
tradition of music in the family. Al
ready he has placed a violin in the one
year old arms of his grandson—who is
the son of the music critic, Samuel
Chotiznoff.
“In the theatre, on the other hand,
we have a way of assuming that Jews
are foremost. It’s not so. Here, in
New' York, the theatre is in Jewish
hands, but it’s a question of real es
tate. The Shuberts are an outstanding
example. They’ll produce a play if
there’s a theatre available, but they
started as real estate operators, and
they prefer to continue that way. Some
few of our great playwrights are Jew
ish, but for the most part they are
Gentile. For George S. Kaufman there
is Eugene O’Neill and Marc Connelly.
And so on right along the list.
“Of course the Jews are undeniably
prominent and at home in the theatre.
It may be because the theatre is a
substitute for passion, and perhaps be

cause the theatre is the place for
exiles.
In the musical field it is different.
The Jews are not only writing the
songs of the nation, but cracking the
jokes. Tell a joke to a Jew and he
says. ‘I’ve heard it.’ Tell it to a goy
and he doesn’t get it.
“I will say that four out of six humor
ists are Jews. But then four out of six
people I know are Jewish, so there’s
no way of telling. Sometimes I think
the wellspring of current American
humor is New York’s East Side.
Cradled in the ghetto. An exception is
Ed Wynn—Izzy Epstein—who used to
he in my class in Central High School
in Philadelphia. But witness Milt
Gross, the Four Marx Brothers, Harry
Hershfield, Montague Glass, Julius
Tannen, A1 Jolson, Eddie Cantor,
George Jessel, Rube Goldberg (though
lie happened to originated on the other
side of the continent). When it comes
to music, the sons of the East Side arc
paramount. Paramount? They’Ve
Warner Brothers, Fox, R. K. O., Uni
versal, and all the other movie octopi
incorporated. They have it all their
own way from Irving Berlin on the
East Side to George Gershwin on the
West—they’ve made every key on the
piano a promissory note.”
Mr. Wollcott was certainly knock
ing some of our preconceived ideas
about the place Jews held in the theatre
into a cocked hat. There was still this
matter of accent . . .
He cryptically told this anecdote: “In
London, Mrs. Patrick Campbell was a
great hit in ‘The Matriarch.’ For her
performance she devised a thick and
juicy dialect made up of German, Yid
dish, and English, with a little frosting
of French. Prince George, who saw the
play, and was so delighted with it that
he came backstage to pay respectful
homage, asked Mrs. Campbell where
under the sun she got that dialect. ‘I
copied it from your grandfather,’ was
her reply. The English are quite wil
ling to forget that the Kaiser spoke
an English less German than Edward
VII.” Apparently no one has the prem
ium on accents.
So this phantom Jew, this nightmare,
really exists only for us. He serves as
splendid disciples, but we really ought
to lay the ghost.
Thus the Jew. And thus Dr. Alex
ander Woollcott.
