The Southern Israelite
ticularly since the armistice contributed
proportionately considerable sums to Pal
estine and to the most distant and most
varied Jewish national Institutions, while
under the direction of that eminent Jew,
of whom Belgian Judaism has just re
cently been bereft, their voice was at all
times listened to with the highest con
sideration in all the important Zionist and.
Jewish deliberations of the last few years,
so fertile in event and decisions.
The formation and the existence of the
Belgian Committee, called “Palestine-
Belgium,’ made up of political and so
ciety personages of the highest rank,
won over to the id:*a of Jewish Palestine,
are another sign of the esteem that in
Belgium surrounds the name of the Jew
and his aspirations. This committee, as a
matter of fact, is placed under the direc
tion of the President of the Belgian Sen
ate and counts among its number some
of the most eminent figures in all ranks
and in all parties of Belgian society.
And King Albert, himself, whose demo
cratic spirit is well known and who made
of two Belgian Jews, Mr. Philipson and
Baron Casscl (upon whom a title of no
bility was conferred by him) his most
intimate financial advisers, saw fit to
evince his good-will towards the Jewish
population and to signify his interest in
the Jewish movement by receiving in a
particularly cordial and lengthy audience
Mr. Weizmann, during his passage
through Brussels last year.
This is an indication of how the pres
ent regime, whose policy is traditionally
in keeping with the mentality of Belgium,
is worthy of such exceptional citation as
an example to a Europe partially ravaged
by anti-Semitism.
And there is exceptional value to the
example, fy^cause it is a question in the
premises of a country that suffered cruel
ly in the course of an atrocious war, the
consequencesjof which serve so frequently
as pretexts and as an excuse for the
hatred and the exactions of which our
brother Jews arc the victims in four or
five countries of Central and Eastern
Europe.
Also, in the political field, the Belgian
Jews Have contnTnited TKeir part, in the
origin, one of the leading political figures
person of Minister Hymans, of Jewish
of the country. On the other hand, the
deceased Senators Winer and Strauss oc
cupied an important place in the affairs
of this valiant small country, which in all
respects is deserving of being cited in the
front rank of free and hospitable nations.
Let us state some further points of
history that it is worth while dwelling
upon.
The Jewish communities of the coun
try, grouped into an organization pro
vided for by the Napoleon Code, and
which we have mentioned above—The
Israelite Consistory of Belgium—have ex-
