Our Bewildered Generation
(Continued from Page 45)
to have written a book, “The Pure in
Heart,” wherein he pleads for a return
to the old conventionalities. Victorian-
ism will never again triumph, but a new
moral orderliness is certain to arrive. The
middle generation of today is the in
surgent generation of fifteen years ago.
They have learned stability for them
selves through the necessities of their
own life, and through the exigencies of
acting as guides to their children. In a
Talmudic narrative Rabbi Akiba calls his
sons: “My children, my children, my
teachers, my teachers! My children who
reverenced me, my teacreds who en
lightened me!” The young adults who
have settled down to the business of liv
ing are now being enveloped by the con
servatism which overtakes all persons of
vested interests, property and human. It
remains for the still newer generation to
assert its inalienable privilege of bel
ligerency and revolt. But the transvalua
tion of values created by the war’s moral
destructiveness is past. Floyd Dell, writ
ing in “Parents’ Magazine,” indicates
that the young literary radicals of a de
cade ago have found that chaos spells un
happiness and unrestraint brings neurosis
and misery. The playmates during days
of irresponsibility have disappeared; the
girls have gravitated to husbands who
can give them security and home; the
men have chosen mates who can be help
meets to themselves and mothers of their
children. If the challenging spirit of
“Moon-Calf” has vanished, another set
of values has emerged, and adult life
with its imperative obligations has sought
to devise its own estheticism and spirit
uality.
In the place, therefore, of recklessness
the mood of caution has come. The mad
ness to speculate has eventuated in eco
nomic disaster. Our economic and politi
cal leaders are confronted with the task
of salvaging the wreckage which their
own submission to the adventures of the
hour produced. In the field of inter
national affairs our Western culture is
engaged in a race with a new semi-Orien-
tal civilization, which has sought to gain
a fresh start in the human task. In the
field of faith and morals unbelief and
codelessness have brought about boredom
and despair. The new voices are calling
for clarity, constructive belief and well-
poised behavior. It is well-nigh time that
humanity came to itself. Europe and
America have been a mad-house now for
two decades; before 1914 we lived under
the menace of militarism; from 1914 to
1918 mankind completely lost its reason;
since 1918 we have been seeking to re
cover our balance, though we ourselves
have been our own worst enemies. Disil
lusion may at least begin to give way to
hope. Distraction may at last vanish in
a new harmony and unity. What man
kind needs is a sense of a worth-while
goal, an objective which, though Utopian,
can fire its energy anew. We echo the
word of John Mansfield:
“We seek the City of God, and the haunt
where beauty dwells,
And we find the noisy mart and the
sound of burial bells.
Friends and loves we have none, nor
wealth, nor blest abode,
But the hope, the burning hope, and the
road, the lonely road.”
