Little Napoleon
j s the saga of a Jewish Little
,,n. Napoleon is the name that
, xn given to “Benny” Goodman,
ls to be appointed as a special in-
tor in the United States De-

a law degree and a fine educa-

has given him the title of Little

\tx.iit ten years ago Benny deter-
mud to see his father—not an unusual
initiation; hut his father was three
isarnl miles away. At that time
m> was living in a small town in
his father was eking out a

i he could send for his family,
my became very impatient, loving
r and desiring very much to see
so he packed up his little "kittele”
i trudged hundreds of miles, day in
flay out, until he reached Holland,
hose days consular officials were
r than they are now. The He-
ew Immigrant Aid Society was doing
lohle job, and received word of the
flight of the youngster. So impressed
d the American officials become with
story that they made arrangements
legalize his entry into this country,
n came to these shores, and with
aid of the Jewish Educational
nee and Hias he became a full-
'•dged American with a fine legal
nng behind him. By the way, the
t of the family arrived also.
Little Napoleon wants to be a
nth. He secured an audience with
nator (loldsborough, who was so
K en with his story that he endorsed
' appointment to the Depart-
’ nt of Justice. This means that Little
" Icon virtually is assured of the
saga is not ended. The story

It is too bad that the same cannot
be said of those adults who wander
from the straight and narrow.
Biblc-Rcculiny in the Schools
A very unusual speech by a very un
usual man was made this week on
religious education in the public
schools. It required a great deal of
courage on the part of Dr. William J.
Cooper, United States Commissioner of
Education, to oppose most emphatically
religious instruction in the public
schools before a conference of Chris
tian ministers in Philadelphia. Dr.
Cooper sounded a clarion call for all
his successors in office and for educa
tors throughout the country when he
said:
“I do not favor reading the Bible
in public schools. If I want my son
taught chemistry I prefer to have him
study with a chemist. If I want him
to learn religion I prefer he should not
get it from a lay teacher in the public
schools. I would like to see a longer
school day and perhaps see some relig
ious organization take advantage of it,
but I have already tried this and it does
not work.
"You may as well recognize the fact
that the school system will never carry
on authentic formal religious training.
You may further recognize that the
American school system is shaking it
self free from tradition.”
Those legislatures who have under
taken to force the reading of the New
Testament in the class rooms of the
public school system throughout back
ward States in the Union has better
take heed of Dr. Cooper’s message.
Those of us who know the Commis
sioner of Education are not at ail sur
prised. A man of liberal tendencies
coming from the free State of Califor
nia, he is a forerunner of the liberal
educational movement in the United
States Government.

London.—It is reported here that
Lord Passfield, secretary of state for
the colonies, submitted his resignation
to Premier MacDonald several weeks
ago, but that MacDonald has convinced
him to stay in the cabinet, at least until
June. It is said that at that time the
adminisration of the colonies, which in
cludes Palestine, will be turned over to
the secretary for dominions.
